Trapped Gas with Pavlik Harness

Our daughter was born with hip dysplasia due to the breeched position she was in. She is seeing a specialist now who has put her in a Pavlik harness. The doctor says this condition is fairly common and happens in 1 out of 1000 babies. We're learning to cope with the harness, but the biggest problem we're having is that our daughter is having a lot of gas problems. We are using the gas drops which help, but she still has a really hard time. Has anyone else had to use one of these harnesses and had this problem?

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

I have a cousin whose daughter had the same problem, so thats mostly why I've responded. I don't know that she had gas problems with her daughter that were specifically related to the harness. Are you sure its the harness causing teh problem? Maybe your daughter needs a new formula, or if she is breastfed maybe its something in your diet? My son was born with a cleft lip and it was easy to blame all his issues on it, but sometimes they were just common baby issues that had nothing to do with is cleft. Good luck. When my son had gas pains it helped to lay him on his back and move his legs like he was riding a bicycle, sort of got stuff moving for him, not sure how possible thi sis with your baby with the harness though.

S., how old is your daughter? does she eat regular foods? If so, it might be something she is eating. I dont know anything about the harness though. I dont think that could be causing the gas. She could also be constipated, Even if she is having bowel movements often enough. If she is eating regular foods, add more fiber to her diet, like apples/applesauce, prune juice, raisins, and water to clean her out. that should help.

S., our daughter was born in Oct 2006 and was in a Pavliv Harness from Oct- Feb. 2007. We did not deal with any gas problems and I would not be so sure to assume that the harness is causing them. It may but it also could be that your baby is baby with gas issues. It sounds like you are doing everything right and "this too shall pass." If you have any other questions or concerns about the harness I would be happy to share what we went through with our experience feel free to contact me.

Hi S.,

My daughter had hip dysplasia and unfortunately had to have three surgeries. Has your daughter had gas before being in the harness or was she put in it right at birth?

The harness could possibly be causing the gas due to the position that her legs are in.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

M.
