Toddler Likes to Play in Messy Diapers :(

My 21 month old likes to stick his hands in his dirty diapers and wipe it all over the place *yeah, I know, nasty*. It doesn't matter if we get to him almost immediately or not. Just this afternoon I was watching a movie with them and he went and started to reach in his pants, right in front of me! We've been told by my mom that this is where the term anal retentive comes from. My question is, has anyone else had this problem with a boy this young and if you have, what did you do to help break him of it. It's really gross and it's hard to keep up with him because he's busy and 1 of 3 boys, the youngest only a month.
Any advice would be appreciated, we don't know what to do and I'm tired of wiping poop off my walls! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I don't know what to do about it, however, I know other kids do it too. My grandpa was just telling me that when my mom was in diapers (even crawling still) she was wipe her poop on the crib if she was in bed. If she was out of bed, she would wipe it all over the wall. They didn't tell me what they did to stop it though. I am sorry. :(

My son did this as well, at about this age. I also had another little one at the time and he really wasn't ready to potty train, he just loved to play in poo. During the day, we put him in onesies and one piece outfits and changed him ASAP. Sometimes he still got in there through the leg holes, so gross... Then he started pooping and getting into it at bedtime and nap time. So we put him in zip up fottie jammies. We cut the feet off and put them on him backwards, because he would get out of everything else. It was a pain and gross, but i was just a phase. He did it for several months and ended up potty training pretty early ( 2 year 4 months). Good Luck!

My kids did not do this, but they each had their occasion when they did, in their cribs, but at a much younger age. Be very firm, not mad; tell "no, poop is germy and can make people sick". Also, you might try potty training. He may just be interested enough to do it.

Time to start potty training! Get a book or movie on training young kids and start with him. We're about the only country that waits so long to train, it can easily be done from the time babies are able to sit on a potty seat.

Have you considered the fact it is time to toilet train? Also it is time to start the "No, nasty" and some type of punishment involved for this behavior. Just a suggestion.

I have no suggestions for you, but I had to respond to clear up your mom's comment. ;-)

Here's a description of the Anal Retentive Personality:

Noun 1. anal retentive personality - (psychoanalysis) a personality characterized by meticulous neatness and suspicion and reserve; said to be formed in early childhood by fixation during the anal stage of development (usually as a consequence of toilet training).

One of the other things that classifies a person as truly anal retentive is that they are so meticulous that they will not poop unless it is under certain conditions (a particular time of day, in a particular place, etc), therefore retaining the waste until releasing it suits their parameters.

I just had to get that off my chest. A bit anal of me, perhaps? LOL!

In all seriousness, I do feel you pain and frustration, and I hope you will find a solution soon.

We had the smae problem with my daughter. I think she was around 2 1/2-3. We just kept telling her no and changing her diaper as quickly as possible. We would try the time out thing but honestly that never worked for us. All I can say is just reinforce the potty and be patient. I totally feel for you!!! We washed the walls in the one apartment so much the dry wall started to wear off! I didnt have the same issue with my son so hopefully it wont get to your second! Good luck! And pray he doesnt eat it!!

You could try to start potty training. Give it a week and see how he does. Strip off his diaper, let him run around naked with the little potty wherever he plays most. Everytime he has an accident take him over and set him on the potty before you clean it up and say "no, that goes on the potty." He might get it faster than you think.

My sister was just recently having the same problem with her toddler. She now keeps him in one piece short outfits instead of 2 piece short outfits that way he can't get his hands down his pants.

I had the same exact problem with my toddler! Recently I purchased a baby pillow that helps tame those curious hands ;)
It's just a pillow that you place on the baby's torso. Hope this helps!
