Has anyone gone to Vegas by train(Amtrak)? If so, please tell me what was it like aboard the train. How was the scenery/view? How was the ride, etc. I'm planning to go with my sister and we do not care to fly.

That sounds like a lot of fun- and way more affordable than flying. I traveled Amtrak about twice a week last summer between Joliet and St. Louis. My only qualms with taking a longer trip by train is that you should probably expect it to be quite a bit longer than listed. The listed time to St. Louis is about 5 hours, and there were times that I was on the train for close to eight hours. You would still have a great time on the train, I just wouldn't schedule anything for right as you get to Vegas! Have a good time!

Hi, We LOVE to travel by train, but my husband just told me that there are no trains to Vegas anymore. We have taken the Southwest Chief which goes to LA a few times. It's route goes into Iowa and drops down to KC then turns West and goes into Colorado (Beautiful). We have only taken it as far as Santa Fe, NM, but you could go further and then rent a car and drive the rest of the way to Vegas. Sorry there are no direct trains.
As for what to expect! We love seeing the countryside change. It is wonderful to live is such a diverse land. We have traveled with kids and have bought a room or roomettes. We have gone coach when we were on a day trip, but anything overnight, it is a nice luxury to invest in! It can cost a lot, but look on Amtrack web site and there are deals to be had. GOOD LUCK!
Have fun in Vegas however you make it there.

T., it's a nice relaxing ride, just long (if I remember correctly, 32 hours). I would recommend bringing your own food/water (sandwichs etc.). The food on AMtrak is HORRIBLE not to mention expensive. Your allowed to bring a small cooler onboard with you If you don't have a sleeping car, bring a small blanket with to be comfy while you nap. Have a great trip and I hope you win!

Hi T.,
My in-laws don't fly either, and LOVE taking amtrak all over the place. They've been out west and love it. They think the food is great and meeting the other people etc... I personally have never taken the train on a longer trip, but do think it might be a fun adventure. Especially without kids. Read, sleep, whatever while someone else drives and you get to get up and move about more freely. They do get a sleeper car when they go on long trips. Have fun.
