I have a daughter who is five years old and she sucks her thumb. She sucks it when she is watching tv, after she eats, and while she is asleep. I am desparate for any advice. She is beginning to push her teeth and gums out. I hate to say it but, she is beginning to look like a beaver and I'm afraid she is gonna to ruin her gums for her permanent teeth. Any remedies on how to get her to stop? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

What can I do next?

My sister and I were both finger suckers. I can't remember what really stopped us, but I know she tried some sour apple polish that goes on your fingernails. I've used this with my nail biter son, you can find some at CVS and it's made for all natural ingredients. You have to brush it on a couple times a day, but they'll soon associate the bad taste with putting their fingers in their mouth. It could work for you.

you can contact your dentist too. there are appliances that can be put in that keeps them from putting anything in the roof of their mouth and will break the habit. If you have insurance - it may or may not cover such appliance. I worked in dentistry for years and we have even put them in adults mouth that finally were embarrassed about sucking their thumb as an adult. But you are right, it creates all kinds of dental problems so its better to nip it in the bud now verses later. you can always try the hot sauces and finger nail stuff you brush on first and if that works - great if not, I would talk to the dentist about it. Good luck.

Hey K.,

My three year old is doing the same thing. We have tried the Control-It regular strenght and the Control-It maximum strength. When he wants to stop it works, but when he doesn't want to stop it doesn't matter what I put on there he will just suck it off. He goes to preschool during the school year and during that time he doesn't really worry about his thumb. I've also noticed, the more my husband and I say something about it to him, he does it more. So we have now moved on to praising him when he doesn't do it and trying to keep him busy on the weekends. There is a thumb guard that you can buy online but if it gets really bad you can call her pediatric dentist and there is a thumbguard that they can attach to her teeth to prevent her from sucking her thumb, but she may still be really too little for that. Good luck.

My daughter wasn't a thumb sucker but my Uncle was for a long time and my grandmother tried putting hot pepper sauce on his thumbs. That didn't work so this is going to sound extreme but she had both of this thumbs put in casts arms included so he couldn't bend his arms to really get them to his mouth. You might want to try some other options but it broke his thumb-sucking. It's always a humorus story. If this doesn't help I hope you at least got a little giggle out of it. =) Good luck.

My brother sucked his thumb and I sucked my finger growing up. We did it no matter what kind of stuff mom did to try to stop - punishing, putting that gross tasting stuff on it, bribing us, etc. We did it way past the acceptable time period a kid would do it (I did it until I was 11yrs old. He was 11yrs old too). Our teeth were bucked teeth and the front teeth were separated. Our parents couldn't afford braces. However, by the time we were 16yrs old, the buck teeth had cleared up by themselves and people (dentists, even) would tell us how straight our teeth are. Good luck

Well, I have never had a problem with it, but I have heard of remedies. People say it is an idea to try when sucking thumbs and breastfeeding goes on forever!

Try lemon juice on her hands, or a little touch of hot sauce. Another idea would be to use some sort of tape on her fingers. I know my Mom used to tape my fingers when I was really small because I would pull my eyelashes out. Weird huh?

How old are your kids? Any young enough to be sucking thumbs and maybe she has picked the habit up?

I currently have a similar problem with my 3 almost 4 year old daughter. When she was a baby she wanted to suck her thumb, I would just remove it from her mouth and tell her it was yucky. Then she moved on to sucking on her index finger and then her 2 middle fingers. My best results to stop her from doing it all the time has been to continue to remind her that it is yucky and that usually works she will stop. If she puts them in her mouth while she is sleeping I just try to keep up with taking them out of her mouth to try to stop the habbit. It hasent compleatly stoped but she does not do it as much.

When I was a child about 5 or 6 years old I had a problem with sucking my thumb my Dad took me to the doctor and the doctor told me if I kept sucking my thumb worms were going to come out of it. It worked I stoped sucking my thumb, however it scared me for a short while.
