I have a friend who's mother lives in Japan. She makes beautiful dolls and recently spent 3-4 months making a doll that resembles my daughter from a photograph. It is beautiful and simply amazing.
I would like to thank her somehow - more than a thank you card, but not quite sure what to send. She is in her late 70's. I would like to give her a small token of appreciation, but need to be cost conscience and have to deal with shipping, etc.
Is there anyone out there that might have an idea of a small thank you gift?

I love the idea of a picture of your daughter with the doll. Maybe you can get matching outfits. Then frame it, and have your daughter make a card. You also write a letter telling her how much your daughter loves her new "friend".

Can you find out from your friend if there are any supplies or tools that her mother might need to continue enjoying her craft? I knit socks for friends and family and while a nice hand written note and knowing that the received is enjoying their gift is thanks enough for me, I have also received knitting supplies as a thank you for a gift.
Maybe you can take a pretty photograph of the doll and your daughter together, and put it in a small and pretty frame? Dress your daughter really cute and take the photo with a really pretty background.
Really though, I'd ask your friend if her mother has any particular likes... is there something in America she loves, is she traditional Japanese and would appreciate a gift celebrating her own culture? Maybe a small little lap blanket or something.

You need to find someone who is an expert on Japanese customs and gift giving protocol. It's a very delicate situation when sending appropriate gifts that are respectful and do not cause social gaffs.
You are very fortunate that she gave your daughter such a fine heirloom.
If your daughter is old enough to draw, then have her draw a picture and tell a story about her new dolls adventures. That would be a wonderful gift and thank you for the home made doll.
Hi, I think taking a pic of your daughter playing with the doll would be great. Maybe you could include a special book like the ones they have at halmark and such-- that say why she is a good friend etc., poetry, a nice comforting scarf or pair of slippers even-- most people I know love to get comfort gifts.
