I have a 5 1/2 month old little boy who has to be swaddled to sleep, the tigher the better. We have to double wrap him to get him to keep sleeping! We have tried the sleep sack, and he sleeps for about 10 minutes and cries awake. He is now in his crib after about 5 months in the bassinet. We put him to bed awake and he likes his music aquarium to get to sleep. So we are wondering do we just keep swaddling? Is there a good reason not to? Could it be harmful? And how to transition out of it? Any thoughts or ideas would be helpful!
I was still swaddling both my kids at 5 months, I think they did let me stop right around that time though. I would keep doing it if that's what your little boy likes. I bet in a month or so he will be ready to be done with it anyway. I don't see any harm in it. Good Luck!
Swaddle him for as long as he likes. No need to "transition" him out of it. He will let you know when it no longer suits him. ;-)
We swaddled our son until (I think) 6 or 7 months. We stopped because he had really outgrown his velcro swaddler--we were really stuffing him in there!--and he was breaking free to roll and move before nodding off to sleep.
We swaddled our kids until they could get out. Our son would only sleep until about 5 months being swaddled. It is just like you, he had to be double swaddled and very tightly or else he was up instantly. We eventually had to give it up because he escaped too much. We switched to a sleep sack which helped him sleep better too. I don't think there is a reason not to. It's not harmful, and it soothes them. Go for it, if he likes it, why not?
I've read that some babies just really like to be swaddled sometimes up to a year. We were able to transition out of the swaddle at about 3-4 months by gradually phasing out the swaddle. We started by leaving one arm out for a week, then both arms out and eventually the swaddle blanket itself..then we switched to a pekemoe for a few weeks...http://www.pekemoe.co.nz/ after that to the sleep sac.
We swaddled our twins until they got themselves out. Probably around 6 months.
Ok, I have no real thoughts here. But, I am so glad that you asked this question. I have the same one. With my older child, I really don't remember her liking it as much, and it seems like she just kind of stopped liking it. But with number 2, he really likes it, and I don't know the age that is "normal" for him to transition out of it. He is 4 months now, and sounds a lot like yours. He loves it!

We are still swaddling our 6 month old. He sleeps better, and it keeps him warm on the cold nights. He's starting to work his way out of it at night now. Do it until he tells you to stop :)
