Unfortunatley, I am an individual is allergic to a lot of things. One of my allergies is against sulfa's. I was wondering if anyone knows of some really good sulfate free cleansing products....shampoo, body wash, detergent, toothpaste. I have found a couple of products but would love more to choose from. OH and a thank you to the mom, that mentioned sulfates in sunscreen on one previous questions. You got me to put two and two together and made me realize that my skin problems could be due to my cleansing products, considering I have had this allergy for over 10 years, you think I would have realized, but I can be scatterbrained at times.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have been off of sulfa products for months and my skin is great. I actuall found a number of products at our local Walgreens of all places. They the complete line of Burt's Bees products and the stuff is great. I also found some sulfate free all natural hand cleaner at our local health store. What is best, is I don't have to use as much lotion anymore. Which saves me money.

I use a shampoo and conditioner that is made by Brocato that says Sulfate-free on the side. You should be able to purchase the product line from most hair salons or they should be able to order it for you.

This is a recipe for laundry detergent you can make yourself. I guess you have to be careful that the bar soap you add is sulfa free. I think Castile would be. The woman I got this from writes the following:
It's very cost-effective (I think it cost me about $16 for all the ingredients--MUCH cheaper than the "earth-friendly" detergents I'd been buying for 20 years). I have only made it twice in the past year and I still have a little bit. You only use half a cup for each load. It seems to work pretty well. There are a bunch of variations on this theme but they're all basically the same.

1/2 c. washing soda (I used Arm & Hammer)
1/2 c. Borax
1/3 bar soap ( I used Fels Naptha, in the detergent aisle, but Ivory, Kirk's Hardwater Castile and Zote are also recommended)

In a large pot, heat 3 pints of water. Grate the bar soap into the hot water and stir until melted. Then, add the washing soda and Borax. Stire until the powder is dissolved, then remove from heat.
In a clean 2-gallon bucket, oour 1 quart of hot water and add the heated soap mixture. Top off pail with cold water and stir well.

Arbonne has a whole line of products that are sulfate free. The new FC5 line made from fruits and vegetables has a great shampoo and body wash. As far as the cleansing products I would go to a "whole foods" grocery store, Publix probably has some as well. Ck out Arbonne's web at www.successfromtheheart.myarbonne.com and click on Products. Email me if you have questions. Thanks, K.

Hi T.,

I've been shopping from Melaleuca for a couple of years and they have no harmful ingredients in their products. I actually became a customer to get non-toxic toothpaste for my handicapped son. I now use all the soaps, shampoos, etc. Check out these websites for introduction and product store. http://www.melaleuca.com/introduction (click on middle video and it will take you through all of them) http://www.melaleuca.com/ps...please know that many products are super concentrated...such as tub-n-tile bathroom cleaner...$5.69 for 16 ounces, but it makes (4) 24 ounce bottles. So, you're also saving money. The soaps last me three months! As preferred customers, we get PC prices. After viewing these sites, if you are interested in becoming a customer, please message me. I'll take you to a slide show presentation so you can see benefits of membership and help you become a customer. They're such an awesome company!

Hi T.,
I have allergic reaction to sulfa drug's also.(And a sensitivity to the sulfate food additives. Symptoms are simular to migrane.) At this point I haven't had issues with laurel sulfate which is in shampoo, but I do try to avoid it in lotions. It seems that natural occuring sulfite/sulfate do not affect me. I use mostly Aveeno and Oil of Olay products. Major face breakouts that I have had due to diet have occured when eating food with shortening, or mango juice. And I can tell by the brake out that it isn't normal pimple issues. Any processed citrus is suspect as it usually contains sulfa something. Best Wishes for finding good products to use and thanks everyone for posting alternatives! S. M.

Hey! I am allergic to sulfa too. I never connected these two things, but I also have to use toothpaste without SLS (sodium laurel sulfate) or else I get terrible canker sores in my mouth. I use Rembrandt's Extra Gentle formula. I get it at Walgreens, and I pray they never stop making it b/c I love it and it makes a huge difference for me. Hope it helps you too!
