Hi Mamas,

I need to store my 2 bedroom condo furniture for about 6 months or so in between selling and purchasing a new home. Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences with storage units or portable storage such as pods? I like to know which one is better and also cost is a big factor.

I've used PODS and loved it. I particularly loved that they drop it off at your house, so you don't have to load and unload your stuff in a truck. You can still access your stuff whenever you need. My only advice would be to pack it very tightly, or use bunji cords to attach items to the sides of the pods (there are hooks) to prevent shifting when it is moved.

PODS are wonderful!! We used one when we moved out of our apartment while we were waiting for our house to close. They drop the container off u load it and they take it away not to be thought about again until you are ready to move into your new house. If you are looking for something long term a POD may not be the most cost effective as it is a lot more costly than a storage unit but I thought it was well worth it to only have to load and unload once.

Hi
I have never used a POD...but I do have a storage unit. However, I use the unit to store things that I don't need on a regular basis like seasonal decorations and the likes. For storing an entire home's worth of things I would think a POD would be more ideal. First, it is brought to your location to fill and then taken to their storage area. Second, when you are ready to move into your new place it is brought back to you. Saves you the time of going back and forth from a storage unit to your home.

That is my opinion and I hope it helped you in some way.

Hi G.,

I manage a self storage facility in the North Bay. While PODS are for sure eaiser, if price is an issue, a storage unit is the way to go. Storage units also allow you to have access to your items, should you need something, while I am pretty sure PODS do not.

I also thought I would mention you should call around to your local facilities and see what kind of specials they are running. Occupancy has been down across the board in our industry, so we are all offering huge move- in incentives/ discounts. Not sure what kind of deals are going on near you, but for example, we offer the 3rd and 4th months free when you pay for the first two months.

I would also call the non-corporate locations 1st, usually locally owned facilities will offer better deals, and are eaiser to deal with.

Good luck, and I hope it all works out!

I don't know how the prices compare, but we had to move practically our entire home into a PODS unit on our driveway while we did a remodel. It was GREAT--no complaints, and very easy to move stuff in and out at our convenience without having to drive to a storage location. Highly recommend the PODS.

we used "DoorToDoor" to store a couple rooms worth of stuff when we were preparing to sell our old home and it worked well for us. The convenience and time savings of being able to load your stuff into the units that were taken to their storage facility and then delivered to our new place (instead of into a truck and then into a storage unit and then back into a truck and then into our new place) was worth the cost difference IMO.
