Spit Up... How Much Is Too Much?

Just wondering how much or little does your little one spit up after eating ... my 3 1/2 mo old daughter seems to spit up so much, but nothing to excessive that would make me think something was wrong. She always has her hands in her mouth and Im wondering could that be triggering more spit up than usual.

What can I do next?

does she spit up when shes laying down?? my son spits up alot too, i bought a wedge that you place under the sheet and it props them up a little bit so they are not completely flat, it helped alot. I also had him on zantac, but i stopped it to see if he was getting any better and he is. try keeping her upright after feeding and see how that helps

Generally, as long as they're not spitting up nearly as much as they're taking in, it's normal. I currently have a 1 1/2 month old, but I also have 4 others, every one of them spit up to some degree. As long as it's not 'projectile barfing' and it's not the entire amount they just ate, I wouldn't worry too much about it. All my kids probalby spit up at least a Tablespoonfull or more a few times a day after drinking their bottles...

Hi C., my son is now 6 months old but when he was about your daughter's age he was spitting up a lot as well. I did notice that he sometimes made himself gag when his hands were in his mouth (triggering more spit up) and therefore began taking his hands out and replacing them with a pacifier. He only spits up once in a while now so I would say that it will minimize as she gets older. Also, don't lay her down right away after feedings. I'd say you have nothing to worry about but never doubt yourself, if you ever feel something is wrong just call the nurse at her clinic. Hope this helps :O)

As long as it doesn't smell sour, the baby's ok. Just sacrifice a little baby blanket, (the recieving blanket from the hospital) to sling over your shoulder, and wipe up the spit up.

Hi C.,

My 4 1/2 month old daughter spits up alot too, and constantly has her hands in her mouth! (She also just had two teeth come in 2 weeks ago...) The pediatrician wasn't too concerned cause she is gaining weight.(Is your daughter gaining like she should?) He still prescribed her zantac because she really does spit up, so much that I wonder how she is possibly gaining anything..anyways, it seemed to be working for a couple of weeks but these past 2 days she hasn't had the same appetite she normally has (and I put the zantac in her bottles) and she started spitting up alot again. Each baby is different but it seems like all of them spit up...some more than others. So who knows. Like I said as long as she is gaining it's probably ok. I have a couple of friends that have babies 2 months older than mine and they have all told me that their babies grew out of it around the age of 5-6 months...so I'm hoping that stands true with mine and now yours too!
