My niece is in a singing competition. She has an amazing voice and loves a challenge! She is looking for a jazzy or a hip hop song, preferably not one from this year or the past couple years, those get used a lot and then it doesn't seem to be original, any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you

So What Happened?

I love the musical ideas :) I should have added she has to do a dance routine with it and it needs to be a faster beat song for that catergory... But she doesn't want to do a Brittany Spears type as they have all been beaten to death. Im no help as I have always prefered country. I told her these boots are made for walking... she laughed at me lol

How about these? I worry about jazzy if the audience can't recognize the song. It has to be familiar enough that the audience can get into it.

Nelly Furtado "I'm Like a Bird"
Natasha Bedingfield "Unwritten"
Pink "Perfect"
Cyndi Lauper "Time After Time"
Duffy "Mercy"
Adele "Pounding Pavements" or "Rolling in the Deep"

I love musical numbers, so here are a few of my favorites:
Les Miserables "On My Own"
Wicked "Defying Gravity" (incredibly difficult)
Phantom of the Opera "Think of Me"
Guys & Dolls "If I Were a Bell"

Good luck to her! BTW, my BIL is from Decorah. It is beautiful!

This is not a hip hop or jazz song. But a suggestion for something else. Why not check into some of the songs from big musicals. my daughter used to compete in pagents. the kids who won (and yes my daughter was one lol) were the girls who sang songs from musicals not the brittany spears / rhianna type songs. My daughter did the "your never fully dressed without a smile" song one year and also the "does god love little fat girls" Can't remember off the top of my head what musicals they were from. the one I think was "do black patent leather shoes really reflect up" the other one might have been annie but not sure. good luck

Remember the "Friends" theme, "I'll be There for You," by the Rembrants? They did a full-length version.

dunno why, but the first thing that comes to mind for me when you say "jazzy" is Ella Fitzgerald's version of "A Tisket, A Tasket".

Maybe something from Madonna's non-racier repertoire would be ideal for her. Or maybe a musical number like a few has suggested before, like from Chicago, A Chorus Line, Wicked, Mary Poppins or Sister Act? good luck!!!
