Hello moms. I will be moving to San Antonio this summer. My mother lives on the Northwest side of town. I am looking for baseball/football/basketball teams for my son to join, he is six. I am also looking for girls softball teams/ basketball for my 8 going to be 9 years in June old daughter. I am not familiar with San Antonio at all. I grew up there but have been away for 10 years. I am looking for educational and competitive, nothing crazy but a really great enviornment for them. Anyone know of a league that you have GOOD experience with! Thank you all for you help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your help. I knew about the websites but was excited to see there were no horror stories about the leagues you all were a part of. Thanks again for all your advice, I am no longer worried but excited about the opportunities the children will have.

You can't beat the YMCA programs! Every kid plays and they
try to make it fun! Having coached in their leagues for 5
years I never had the "Nasty" parent experience that I had
in other leagues!

My boys (ages 4 & 6) play in Northwest Little League (the fields are located in Leon Valley). Check out the main Little League website to see their maps for which league area you will be in (it is all "zoned"). They both played Fall Ball at NWLL and it was more educational and less competitive, and now Spring Ball is still educational, but more intense competition-wise. We really like it so far. We have lots of friends that do sports at the new Braundera YMCA (at Bandera & Braun, inside 1604). We do swim lessons & team at the Northside ISD Natatorium (you can google to find their website) - they are year-round, indoor - really good educational program. Our 6 yr old also attends classes at the Artworks art studio for kids (google them, too) & really enjoys the no-pressure art learning. They have all kinds of summer program options. I also know that the Oak Hills Church (at I-10 & Camp Bullis) has a Fall basketball program for kids that is less competitive and more learning. Hope some of this helps. Welcome back to SA!

Hi Alma,
For baseball & softball you can try Little League, YMCA or CYO. I think most of these leagues have already had sign-ups so it may be too late for this summer. I know Little League has fall ball also. The Little League you join would depend on where you live - you have to live in the boundaries. For football, there is Pop Warner. There is also another league but I can't remember what it's called. I know it does not have a weight limit. Pop Warner has a weight limit for each division. Their sign up is usually in May. You can do a google search to find their specific websites. My son played for the NW Raiders with Pop Warner & also played Little League & CYO for baseball. CYO & the YMCA have basketball leagues. Hope this helps.

Welcome to San Antonio. I think that you will find everyone warm and sincere. You are also in for "alot of great mexican food"!

I happen to be a Realtor, with 5 children of my own (20, 19, 18, 15 & 7). 4 Boys and 1 Girl. My kids have always been in sports (baseball, football, soccer, basketball, etc). Where you live will depend upon what's available. Do you know where you are going to live? There are great Little League's (most) and a great YMCA Program.

If there is anything I can do to help you, feel free to call or email me @ ###-###-#### or ____@____.com.

I live on the NE side of SA and there are several organizations all throughout the entire city. You have San Antonio Youth Organization and Capital Park Little League. I think those are on this side of town though. Go to www.mysa.com It is the local papers website. However it might help!

Hope that helps!

My advice depends on which neighborhood you move into. We live in the Great Northwest, and our homeowners' association has a great sports program. They offer almost every sport, and it's extremely affordable. My kids have done soccer through them for several seasons now, and we love it. If you don't move to the Great Northwest I wouldn't be able to tell you other places in the area since we haven't gone outside the neighborhood for that.

Check out www.saysat.org. They will be offering those sports for your kids' age range in the fall. We've had both our boys play soccer w/ SAYSAT, and have had pretty good luck. There is also the city parks & rec. I'm not for certain what the website is; however, I do know of a lady who had her son in soccer last summer & it was indoors (BONUS for San Anton weather!) and it was only $5. Good luck!
