So Exhausted from My Unhappy 11 Month Old.

Up at 4am with screaming uncontrollable crying and tantrums from my 11 month old son all week. All day long very irritable whatevery I do with him, walks, play, sit outside, take into different rooms with me. He lays down at about 7:30pm, fights being tired and has a hard time falling asleep. If I take him into bed with me at 4am when he wakes up screaming he throws his back up and throws his tantrum. I thought it was possibly from putting a little milk in his bottle this week only an ounce or two to start transitioning him so today he will only get his formula and we'll go from there. I don't know what else it could be. He was always not the easiest baby and he has 6 teeth already so I've been through alot of teething with him and he was difficult but not like this. He's so not himself.

I just want to add that his bowel movements are the same and he doesn't have stinky gas problems. He's also eating. Thanks MOMS!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ear infection has never crossed my mind since he has never had one and I always thought he would tug on his ears if that was the case. If it continues I will get him checked for that. Thanks.

Ear infection was the first thing that popped into my mind. And with my kids, there have been a few times where the doc said there wasn't, and two days later I took them back, and there was. If the ear isn't red or doesn't have discharge, that can happen too. I'd see the doc and if negative, try Tylenol/Motrin and a warm compress (warmed rice bag or heating pad) and see if it helps. Good luck, I know this is so hard.

How are his bowel movements? Is his belly hard or popped out? More gas than normal? My daughter has horrid problems with constipation and those tantrums (arching the back, screaming) are very familiar to me. I would definitely cut out the milk and see if that makes a difference. If he's having hard stools or none at all, I would suggest lots of water & fruit. You can also use Mylicon drops if you think it might be gas.
Good luck!

I would take him to the doctor, could be an ear infection or as you say, maybe a reaction to the milk. It is so exhausting when he isn't himself. Good luck and I hope he gets better.

Have you ruled out an ear infection? The only times my son was like this at night is when he had an ear infection.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of great responses but wanted to chime in because we have recently been going through similar with our 17mth old. It could be good ole fashion teething. My 17mth old would be cranky when he was teething the front teeth but nothing major. When we started on back teeth he started waking up between 3 and 5ish with uncontrollable crying. After trying a few different things (bottle, rocking, etc) and him still fighting laying back down we would eventually take him to our bed where sometimes he would fall back to sleep. When he wouldn't we figured teething and would give a little tylenol and orajel. This seemed to do the trick. Sometimes he would want to stay in our bed right next to me and other times he wanted to go back to his bed.

If not teething you might want to put him to bed later. We have even done that (moved bed time to 8:30 and wake up at 6:30 to 6:45) and changed from 2 short naps to 1 long nap right after lunch. Plus, keeping to a routine definitely helps. We go in the same order as often as possible, (dinner, a little play time, bath, book, prayer, bed). Good Luck

Sounds like he may be starting to manipulate. You say he is fine with eating, pooping and teething. My son woke up in the middle of the night when he was that age, and we went in to his room to make sure he was okay and then let him cry it out, it only lasted a minute or two at the most. He stopped waking up after a couple of days. He is probably having a hard time falling asleep because he is overtired, also thus the temper tantrums in the middle of the night. His sleeps habits are all out of wack. Just get him back into his regular routine like before (and if he wakes up in the middle of the night, go in there once to make sure he is okay, and walk out and let him fall back too sleep on on his own). After a couple days he should be back to the old routine. Hope this helps :)

Take hin to the chiropractor! If it is an ear infection, an adjustment should clear it right up without any antibiotics! And if it's because he's uncomfortable or in pain (headache, etc.) an adjustment will deal with that as well. MAKES A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE WITH OUR KIDS EACH TIME!
