Hi everyone.
My father in law is turning 60 next month. The whole family is going to meet them in Vegas for a few days. Let me say, that i absolutely loooove Vegas, and prior to getting pregnant, my husband and I would go out there about twice a year. I will be 6 months pregnant next month when we go, and I am just a bit concerned about all the smoke. I know there is much more to do there then gamble, but I know I will be in the casinos often. My husband is being so sweet and saying he won't go without me. We just had a huge surprise 60th for my mom in the spring, so I want us to have the opportunity to celbrate with his dad, whom I love.
Would you feel comfortable doing this? I was going to call my midwife tonight to ask, but I thought I would also get some responses from all of you. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for the advice so far. We are going to go and I'm sure we will have a wonderful time! We have tickets to see Love, reservations at Smith and Wolensky's, tickets to the Body Exibit, and a day trip planned to the grand canyon and hoover dam. All of these things will keep me away from teh smoke. I guess I just wanted a little mroe reassurance that i was not putting my baby in harms way. Thanks again!

I wouldn't worry about it...that baby has lots and lots of protection and you aren't going to be in the environment for more than a few days...smoking was still legal in bars and restaurants when I was pg with my kids and we were out a lot...I know second hand smoke is very harmful if you are around it a lot, but a short stint should be fine...relax and enjoy yourself!

I love Vegas too, and I absolutely hate gambling. Ironic, huh? The shopping, dining, and spas are awesome, and Vegas is a cheap quick getaway.

If you say you love Vegas and you go there twice a year, it shouldn't be that big of a deal to abstain from gambling in a smoky room for just *one* trip, right? Unless your family plans on spending every waking hour in a smoke-filled room, surely there are other ways that you, as a family, can celebrate this occasion without putting you or your unborn child at risk.

If it were me, I'd definitely go but I would avoid spending much time in areas that were smoky. Surely the family would understand.

Not that it wouldn't be BETTER no to do it, but I honestly don't think one or two nights in a smoke filled room is going to make you go into premature labor or cause a low birth weight. Now if you happen to love it there and want to get a job working in the casino EVERY night... then I would say wait until you have the baby. :) Honestly I don't think cigarette smoke is quite the same as alcohol (Only 1 drink could = FAS), I think it takes continued exposure to do any real harm to the baby. I would have to ask a medical professional to be safe though. Good luck! Let us know what happens. :)

I was there at about 5months pregnant. Not big into the casino scene, but I did check it out. I just was not enjoying it while pg due to smoke, and staying out late, and watching all the drinks go by that I could not enjoy. But my husband was loving it. So I let him do his thing and I turned in early. I also shopped, spent time by pool, and we had some good meals too. We were only there for a few days. So I say, go and do what you can, but recognize you might not be up for hootin' and howlin' like you used to!! I'm sure your family would love that you made the effort to participate in as much of the celebration as you can.

I was 6 months pregnant while in Vegas for my sister's bachelorette party. I did not find it a problem at all. There are lots of smoke free tables in all of the casinos. I think the ventalation systems are very good b/c I never noticed a smokey smell. My blackjack game was also a lot better w/o alcoholic beverages! We also went to Vegas for my sister's 40th birthday. She was the one pregnant this time and she had a great time as well. Use the spas, shopping, non smoking sections of restaurants and the smoke free gaming tables and you should be fine. Have a great time!
