Sleeping?

I'm just being the overly worried mom right now, but is this normal?... My son takes two naps a day, one in the morning and one at night and then he sleeps all night. Yesterday he had his two naps and then when I got him home from daycare we "played" for about an hour, and then he fell asleep again. Right there on the floor. I just figured he didn't nap long enough during his afternoon nap. (this was at like 5:30 that he fell asleep) So then around 9:30 his dad came home, he woke up for a little bit to smile, and then he ate a bottle, so he was up for all of maybe 30 minutes. He then fell back to sleep and slept all night. This morning I changed his diaper, clothes, and put him in his coat (all while he was sleeping still!). This was around 8:30, and usually we wake him up around 7:45. He didn't wake up until I put him in his car seat, and then when he did he just looked at me and laughed, no crying or anything. He has no fever or anything that would indicate he was sick, he's not even fussy. Should I be worried? My day care provider said she'd call if he slept a lot today, but I wouldn't even know what to tell his doctor. My baby is sleeping? Any similar experiences?

**My son is 5 months old**

My son did this once when he was little, he had 2 days of almost nothing but sleep. I did however call the office, they let me bring him in to check him out and told me to keep a eye on him and look for pupils not dialating right, or being unable to stir him. I think you should call and talk to your doc or nurse just in case. K.

My daughter slept a lot too. She napped until she was 5. I wouldn't be too worried, unless you find it hard to wake him up. He could be in a growth spurt right now. How old is he?

Maybe he's getting ready to grow? Maybe he plays hard at daycare, or doesn't sleep soundly? Wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor, just in case. Changes in sleep pattern sounds like a good question to me.

Has he always slept so much? My son will be a year this month and he takes one to two naps a day and then usually sleeps all night long. If this is something unusual for you then i would talk to a doctor, its probley nothing to worry about. He could just be not feeling good and trying to sleep his way out of being sick. I don't think it's unusual but I do think you should keep an Eye on him, a mothers instinct is important and if you feel its abnormal then talk to you doctor. He is still rather small and maybe your just lucky to have a layed back baby. good luck, and keep your chin up.

Your son may be going through a growth spurt. I know my kids were very sleepy when they had/have one. Five months old is still pretty little, I don't think it's odd that he sleeps a lot. I have a 7 month old at my daycare and he sleeps a good part of the day.

But I always say if you are worried, call your dr. or a nurse line. It will make your feel better.

Smile :o)

It's always all right to call your doctor when you have a concern. But I wouldn't worry too much. He's probably growing. My son used to do that, too. For about 4 or 5 days every now and then he'd sleep and eat and sleep and eat and sleep and sleep and sleep and then go right back to his normal schedule. He was just growing. Babies grow so fast in the first year and their bodies work so hard learing to do everything. Some kids just need a lot of sleep. My son is 3 now, sleeps about 10-12 hours a night and takes a 2 hour nap in the afternoon. He's very active, so he just needs more sleep for his body to recoup after playing all day. Daycare can be very stimulating for a child and sometimes they just need to sleep to get over it. But if you're concerned, call your doctor. It never hurts to ask.

My now 2y.o. was exactly that same way..he slept sometimes 18 hours a day till he was almost a year old. Then one day he just woke up and refused naps from then on. Our Dr. said he was probably growing and unless we had trouble waking him or other symptoms then not to worry too much. I never had that issue with my daughter, maybe it's a boy thing..LOL

My oldest went through a sleeping spell like that once for a few days. He came out of it with a tooth!!!!! He got sleepy like that every time he got a new tooth for a while. My second got sleepy like that every time she went on a growth spurt. Hope this helps ease your concerns. :)

My daughter had a day or two like that at about 3 months. She never did have a fever or any other symptoms. When she was done being sleeping beauty she ate a ton for a couple of days. When all the unusual behavior was over, she had grown 1 and a half inches and added almost a pound. I read that a growth spurt like that can really knock a baby out. I hope that's all it is with your son too.

He could be going through a growth spurt. They sleep a LOT when they are going through one. If he's not acting sick or sleepy all the time, I'd count my lucky stars... my baby didn't sleep all night for the first time until she was 12 months old!! She got me up at 1 a.m., 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. from the day she was born.

As long as your son is happy I would say LUCKY YOU! Some kids just require more sleep than others. Or maybe he is going through a big growth spurt right now. He probably gets a lot of stimulation throughout the day since he is in a daycare around a lot of other kids, even watching other kids is stimulation to babies and it may just tire him out. My son didn't sleep through the night until he was a year old, and now even at 2 he still sometimes wakes up so lucky you for having a sleeper at such a young age.

It is completely normal for babies to go through streches like that where they sleep alot. Generally it's a sign of a growth spurt. As long as he's not excessively fussy or running a temp I wouldn't worry about it! Good luck!

Hi J.! My pediatrician once told me that the rule of thumb w/ growth spurts is 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 mos, and 6mos. How close is your son to the 6 month mark? Also, remember that, while the rule gives you a general guideline, your baby is a creature w/ his own set of rules. I wouldn't be too worried about the extra sleeping. In fact, you might take the opportunity to catch a few extra winks, yourself, or read that stack of magazines you've been wanting to get to but haven't had time for. Happy napping!

babies are each as different as there are many, each respond to growth spirts and life differently.. i would not worry about the naps.. and sleeping habits right now. I know that it is normal for a child that age to want to sleep about 12 hours to 15 hours or so a day.. I am sure you are going to have a routine child exam comming up within the next month or so if this issue still continues you should discuss this with your pediatrician/primary care physician. In the meantime you should try to consult web md its THE medical website to consult when you have questions like these.. they would have more precise information on sleeping habits for people of all ages. I would still say you have nothing to worry about, in fact enjoy the time that you get free for the chores and every day ins and outs that you dont get when they are awake..

I wouldn't worry too much. Your baby is just going through a growth spurt. When they do they tend to sleep a lot. My baby is now 7 months and he did the same thing. He still does it from time to time.
