My husband is having a hard time falling asleep. He is very tired but he does not fall asleep untill around 5 in the morning then he is back up at 8. This has been going on for about 4 days now. He is wanting to sleep but cannot. This is causing him to feel groggy, irritable and snappy. He has tried using tylenol pm and drinking tea before going to bed. He doesn't drink any caffeine or anything. This is difficult on him beause he is a full time student and this is making it hard to concentrate in school. I want to help him to be able to get some sleep. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance.
PS he is drinking non c affeinated chamomille.

What can I do next?

"Hyland's Calms Forte."
For adults.
(they have a kid version too).

It is homeopathic.
Non-habit forming.
All natural.
Is NOT a 'tranquilizer" and will not create a 'hung-over' feel the next day.

I use it.
Its good.
It is for men or women.

But being that it is all homeopathic, it will work for some and not for others.
For me, it helps.

You can see it and read the reviews about it on Amazon.
Per the Amazon reviews, one man, a Military guy, takes it and said it works for him.

You can find it at any Whole Foods or natural food store.

There is ALSO something called "Melissa." Which is an all natural sleep aide. I have not tried this but read about it in a magazine.
Amazon also has this, and you can read the reviews of it there.

all the best,
Susan

You've come to the right person! :) Melatonin as someone else suggested. If that doesn't work, Benedryl works great for me. Finally, if he can, a prescription for Lorezepram likely would work. It just calms the mind vs is a sleeping pill. At this point he's probably very overtied and stressed which becomes a vicious cycle. Of course, go natural if you can so I wouldn't start w/ the Lorezepram etc.

Go see the doctor to get some sleep aid a little stronger than Tylenol PM. Does he have time to work out in the morning, maybe that will help him sleep better at night. He cannot exercise in the evening because that can cause more energy, and he won't be tired.

I would try Melatonin. Its something your body produces naturally to regulate sleep. You can get it just about anywhere. I think it comes in 2.5 mg and 5 mg. I use the 5mg ones. They don't make you feel "drugged sleepy" just makes you able to get to sleep. I have taken them late around 12 or 1 at night and still able to get up without feeling tired or drowsy. They are pretty cheap too. $5-6 for a bottle.

Make the house dimly lit about an hour before bed so his mind can "switch gears" to get into what I call "sleep mode". You may also try massaging his back or feet (depending on which he likes best); also, no watching TV in the bedroom. Your mind gets trained that the bed is for sleeping and helps you get to sleep faster if you only go in there to sleep. I've found that I can't drink cokes/sodas after lunch or I'm up late from the caffeine; and even chocolate has caffeine in it. I sometimes have trouble getting to sleep if I've had too much sugar (sweet snacks/desserts) before bed. You can also try letting him soak in the tub about an hour before bed. Apparently Excedrin PM works pretty good, as my husband is already in the bed! (it's only 7:45pm)

I would make sure that he is not watching any TV or playing on the computer at least 1 hr. before bedtime. The brain needs time to unwind! Also make sure that he's eating 3-4 hrs. before going to bed. Does he say that his mind is racing when he lays down? Is there anything different going on at home/work/in the family?? Also make sure that he only lays in bed when it's bedtime. If he watches TV in bed or anything then it can make it hard for the body to realize it's bedtime and not playtime!
