Sippy Cup Problems

Hello everybody! I have a almost 1 year old baby who refuses to drink from a sippy cup. I have tried many different brands (avent, gerber, playtex, NUK) but my baby doesn't drink from any, even though I have been trying since he was 6 month old. Does somebody has a simmilar situation? Please help I really want to wean my baby from his bottles.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

First of all thank you so much for your great advice, you really help me so much! I have to admit that my Dante is still having hjis ocassional bottle but I found my salvation in the sippy cups with the straw, he finally accepted this as his official juice & water cup & I also started him in drinking from my cup, I guess he loves the idea of drinking from where I am drinking. I admit 1/2 of it goes to his shirt but it's a work in progress. Thank you again for all your help & specially for your support. Everybody was great!

My daughter had a similar problem, she wouldnt drink from anything other than a bottle. What I did was went out and bought a bunch of the cups that you can put the straws in, instead and we ended up skipping the sippy cup routine all together. It actually ended up saving us money, and she still uses those cups today. I think that for her it was learning how to sip from the straw and blowing bubbles that made it fun and exciting. Plus she was still sucking on something. Now she drinks from anything. Good Luck!

i agree with the trowing out of the bottles....but you keep one and after he finishes it you discretly take it away and clean it and cut the tip off of a clean nipple and when he asks for the bottle give him the "improved" one and when he noticed the empty bottle just say that it is broken and that you can NOT put any more milk in it, let him keep the bottle. and every time he askes give it to him and remind him about it being broken and also offer the not broken big boy cup full of milk. good luck.... throwing out the bottles keeps you from giving in to him... that is why everyone is saying to do that..

Get rid of ALL the bottles and leave the sippy cup within reach. Eventually when he realizes he's not getting a bottle he will give in! I use Nubs B R US

With my first son, who is now 2, we had to take out all of the stoppers from the cups. Eventually he got the idea and we replaced the stoppers and threw out his bottles. He fussed for less than a day and then figured out that he better drink from his sippies if he wanted to drink at all.

We use the Avent sippies with my youngest son who will be 1 in a few weeks and so far he's doing well. We are hoping to make the permanent switch from bottles to sippies soon.

I had the same problem with my son and found that the nuby cups with silicone spouts worked. After he was used to these cups we moved on to the regular sippy cups. You can usually find them at Walmart. Being in the dental profession getting him off the bottle at 1 is a great idea. Good Luck

Toss every Bottle you (he) owns in the trash. Guess what, when a Bottle is not an option, Sippy cups will be a hit! Try this asap, it works every-time. It's kinda like Dieting, if we don't have the junk food in the house, we won't eat it and gain the weight. Hoewver if we have Healthy foods in the house, when we get hungry, we'll eat them...Make Sense?

okay i totally understand if you dont want to ditch the bottle... i didnt either.. and i still havent.. :) my daughter started drinking from a sippy cup around your sons age... not any sooner... okay.. first i would just give him the sippy cup when he is eating meals... in his high chair.. dont push him to use it all the time.. it will turn him off... but if you put the bottle away during meal times and just fill one up with fruit juice or water or whatever he loves and place it in front of him. you might want to hold it for him the first time... dont push it... just let him know how to get the juice out... then its up to him... dont give him a bottle during meals just the sippy cup... when he gets down from his high chair then you can give in and get the bottle.... but while he is in the high chair its just sippy cup... it might take a few days but he will get it sooner or later... some kids take longer than others... i know a two year old who didnt start the sippy cup until she was about 14 months... and she is one of the smartest toddlers i know! so it doesnt say anything about your son! dont worry it will come... some kids take longer but he wont be on the bottle forever! i promise!

Hope that helps!

my son hated sippy cups too. Try using an empty water bottle if the baby bottle embarresses you outside the home. (You can tell him he's drinking like the big boys.) At home I let mine mess himself up with a regular cup until he got the hang of it. (just put a little something to drink in and a lot of paper towels around and have a special big boys cup that's only for him (George's looked like a crayon)

You can try to use the Dr. Brown sippy cups. They just recently came out and they are designed to work more like a bottle as far as no hard sucking is required. I don't know what kind of bottle you are using but anything is worth a try. www.handi-craft.com is the website and you can find out where to purchase them from a store near you. My daughter is just about 5 months and I already bought a couple for her to use when the time comes. She is already on the dr. brown bottles and loves them. Hope this has helped or at least given you one more option to try.. good luck.
