Hello everybody! I have a almost 1 year old baby who refuses to drink from a sippy cup. I have tried many different brands (avent, gerber, playtex, NUK) but my baby doesn't drink from any, even though I have been trying since he was 6 month old. Does somebody has a simmilar situation? Please help I really want to wean my baby from his bottles.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First of all thank you so much for your great advice, you really help me so much! I have to admit that my Dante is still having hjis ocassional bottle but I found my salvation in the sippy cups with the straw, he finally accepted this as his official juice & water cup & I also started him in drinking from my cup, I guess he loves the idea of drinking from where I am drinking. I admit 1/2 of it goes to his shirt but it's a work in progress. Thank you again for all your help & specially for your support. Everybody was great!

My daughter had a similar problem, she wouldnt drink from anything other than a bottle. What I did was went out and bought a bunch of the cups that you can put the straws in, instead and we ended up skipping the sippy cup routine all together. It actually ended up saving us money, and she still uses those cups today. I think that for her it was learning how to sip from the straw and blowing bubbles that made it fun and exciting. Plus she was still sucking on something. Now she drinks from anything. Good Luck!

i agree with the trowing out of the bottles....but you keep one and after he finishes it you discretly take it away and clean it and cut the tip off of a clean nipple and when he asks for the bottle give him the "improved" one and when he noticed the empty bottle just say that it is broken and that you can NOT put any more milk in it, let him keep the bottle. and every time he askes give it to him and remind him about it being broken and also offer the not broken big boy cup full of milk. good luck.... throwing out the bottles keeps you from giving in to him... that is why everyone is saying to do that..

Hello P.,
Not sure why you started to get him off the bottle at such an early age, doctors recommend not even to feed babies human food until six months of age. Anyway do not be in a hurry to get them off the bottle when the child is ready they will let you know. As it was put to me try something new if it doesn't work give it a break and come back later.

I tried to slowly introduce sippy cups to my son. he wasn't too thrilled about them at first. I was really starting to get frustrated, because he was 17 months old and still preferred the bottle and refused the sippy cup. but the one he would sip from occaisionally, i think is playtex, and it has a soft tip.
we had him completely off of bottles when he got sick with a horrible virus, and could not have fluids for 24 hours, and had an IV attached to his arms. it was one of the most horrible experiences, but the light at the end of the tunnel, was that he was happy to be drinking anything. he was ready, but he needed a bit of a push.

P., I took away the bottles when we were on vacation because they were so excited and it was a different surronding.
Good Luck and dont worry he wont be drinking a bottle when he is 10.

At that age my son wouldn't either, however, they make cups with straws. Playtex makes a brand. He liked the novelty of sipping from a straw like mama and papa did. Later on I introduce the sippy cup. I think it he had an issue with tipping his head back to drink...even though he did that with a bottle. I don't know, you may want to try the sippy cup that have a straw..it may be easier. Children are pretty savy when it comes to developmental stages, they prepare us.

Have you tried those plastic one from First Years? They are durable enough to reuse, but cheap enough to toss out? They come in Thomas the Train, Cars...I dont know about girly ones because I havent had to look for them yet... lol
ANYWAY, they dont have valves, so they are really use to sip out of. And they are leakproof. Well sorta, sometimes a few drips leak out, but nothing terrible. They were the only cups my then 13 month old would use, because it was easy to get the juice out. Give them a try.
And I agree with the other mom, throw out those bottles! :)

Hi I would worry about it too much, my son Giuliano never drank from a sippy cup, he just took regular cups. I think try giving him regular plastic cups and drink with him so he will imitate you. I hope this works out give it a shot, I found this easier since you won't have to wean from a sippy to regular cup in the future.

With my first son, who is now 2, we had to take out all of the stoppers from the cups. Eventually he got the idea and we replaced the stoppers and threw out his bottles. He fussed for less than a day and then figured out that he better drink from his sippies if he wanted to drink at all.

We use the Avent sippies with my youngest son who will be 1 in a few weeks and so far he's doing well. We are hoping to make the permanent switch from bottles to sippies soon.

P.,
I am a speech-language pathologist and as part of my job we deal with a lot of feeding/drinking/oral motor issues with little ones. It is SO FINE that he will not drink from a sippy cup. Actually, it is BETTER (for oral motor development) just to teach him to drink from a regular cup. It will help to develop the muscles in his mouth/tongue that he needs for speech. My daughter has never used a sippy. She's been drinking from a regular cup since 5 months old. It may be a little messy at first, but he'll get the hang of it!

Just to be clear - it is fine to use a sippy cup, but it is also important that the little ones learn to use a regular cup, too!

Good luck.

Try the Nuby sport sipper....like a nipple with the top cut off. You can also only offer a cup at lunch and nothing else. Then gradually work it into other feedings. He won't go to Kindergarten with the bottle...hang in there.

You can try to use the Dr. Brown sippy cups. They just recently came out and they are designed to work more like a bottle as far as no hard sucking is required. I don't know what kind of bottle you are using but anything is worth a try. www.handi-craft.com is the website and you can find out where to purchase them from a store near you. My daughter is just about 5 months and I already bought a couple for her to use when the time comes. She is already on the dr. brown bottles and loves them. Hope this has helped or at least given you one more option to try.. good luck.

my son hated sippy cups too. Try using an empty water bottle if the baby bottle embarresses you outside the home. (You can tell him he's drinking like the big boys.) At home I let mine mess himself up with a regular cup until he got the hang of it. (just put a little something to drink in and a lot of paper towels around and have a special big boys cup that's only for him (George's looked like a crayon)

okay i totally understand if you dont want to ditch the bottle... i didnt either.. and i still havent.. :) my daughter started drinking from a sippy cup around your sons age... not any sooner... okay.. first i would just give him the sippy cup when he is eating meals... in his high chair.. dont push him to use it all the time.. it will turn him off... but if you put the bottle away during meal times and just fill one up with fruit juice or water or whatever he loves and place it in front of him. you might want to hold it for him the first time... dont push it... just let him know how to get the juice out... then its up to him... dont give him a bottle during meals just the sippy cup... when he gets down from his high chair then you can give in and get the bottle.... but while he is in the high chair its just sippy cup... it might take a few days but he will get it sooner or later... some kids take longer than others... i know a two year old who didnt start the sippy cup until she was about 14 months... and she is one of the smartest toddlers i know! so it doesnt say anything about your son! dont worry it will come... some kids take longer but he wont be on the bottle forever! i promise!

Hope that helps!

Toss every Bottle you (he) owns in the trash. Guess what, when a Bottle is not an option, Sippy cups will be a hit! Try this asap, it works every-time. It's kinda like Dieting, if we don't have the junk food in the house, we won't eat it and gain the weight. Hoewver if we have Healthy foods in the house, when we get hungry, we'll eat them...Make Sense?

I had the same problem with my son and found that the nuby cups with silicone spouts worked. After he was used to these cups we moved on to the regular sippy cups. You can usually find them at Walmart. Being in the dental profession getting him off the bottle at 1 is a great idea. Good Luck

I just needed to say that you shouldn't feel bad about wanting to wean him off a bottle at a "young age". My daughter was weened at 6 months to a nuby cup (as a few others have suggested) and as soon as I realized that the reason she didn't drink from it the first few times I gave it to her was that the holes weren't actually cut through, she took it without any problems at all. Our pediatrician says that babies as young as 4 months can begin weaning to a sippy cup, of course making sure not to get one for a 1 year old at that age. After she used the nuby cup for quite a few months, the transition to a regular style sippy cup was no problem. Now she'll pretty much drink out of anything. I recently bought her a Sigg water bottle because she was constantly drinking out of mine. That is a good investment too because there is no leaching as with plastic cups and it's better for the environment. Kleen Kanteen also makes stainless steel sippy cups that you can buy a regular top for too so they can grow with the child. I think the Nuby cups should do the trick (they even have one that is very similarly shaped to a bottle) and if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Eventually it will happen. Good luck and don't get too stressed out.
