Hi moms! About 2.5 weeks ago my daughter (2.5 yrs old) started with a runny nose (yellowish-green) and phlegm cough. After about a week it went away. Then about 3 days later her nose started running clear and there was a peskey wet cough that wasn't constant or too much of a bother but I could tell it was there. Just a little...wet. Anyhow, Friday she woke up & was crying saying her ear hurt. Little Children's Motrin & she was happy. She didn't eat much for lunch that day & said her belly hurt. Same with dinner. Just after her afternoon nap, I noticed she felt a little warm. She was at 102.5. She ended up vomiting the little she had eaten. I didn't want her to have to wait to see the doc on Monday if she was in pain so I took her to Urgent Care. The doc there was very friendly & said she has a sinus infection & gave her some antibiotics to take. Well, I gave them to her Fri night, all day Sat, and all day Sun.

For the most part she seems to be doing better. Fever is gone. She doesn't complain about her ear. She's eating decent again. Here's my question (sorry it took so long to come out): Her eyes are now gooey. They are getting this nasty off-white/yellowish goo in them. I wipe them out with a cool wet washcloth & it just comes right back. It's gross! Anyhow, I wouldn't think after 2.5 days of antibiotics we'd be seeing a new symptom... What do you think? Is this all part of a sinus infection? I mean, I know all our parts are connected but it just seemed odd that this would just be happening now ...I should say, I went onto WEBMD and they didn't list that as a symptom anywhere. So, you think it's something new? Maybe a mis-diagnosis? She's always been a very healthy kid.

Thanks Moms!!!

I would follow up with her doctor tommorow. My daughter had an ear infection, was put on anti-biotics (amox), and after 5 days, was having new symptoms with a fever. The pedi said that the amox wasn't strong enough and she had gotten a sinus infection while on antibiotics. They put her on zithromax and she did great! It worked great and she's all better now.

I don't claim to know anything about your household and I would guess that you have regular cleaning and personal care products in your home. You may want to check out the non-chemical household products that even the Cleveland Clinic says has a contribution to alll of your childs symptoms. I know this because this is my business. My passion is to educate people with "everyday childhood issues" that can be prevented. I wish I could shout it from the mountain tops....THE CHEMICALS IN YOU HOME ARE DANGEROUS! Please let me know if you want anymore info. Good Luck

My 3.5-yr-old had the same discharge from her eyes, after she was very congested for a couples days. Her eyes were not pink or itchy, so it wasn't pink eye. A few days after that, she said her ear hurt. She had an ear infection and antibiotics cleared it up. Our doctor also said their sinuses are not formed at this age, so they don't really get sinus infections. That makes me wonder about the doctor you saw --- but still, I would think whatever it was would clear up by 3 days after you started antibiotics... not get worse. I would call your trusted pediatrician.

I think it is part of the sinus infection. My 2.5 yo always gets the nasty eye goo when she has a sinus infection and more recently I have started getting it at times as well. I would stay the course on the antibiotics and if it continues in the next 2-3 days call your pedi for a follow-up. Sometimes they need a decongestant to help break stuff up in there along with the antibiotic.

my boys used to get this -and they needed an antibiotic eye drop. its easy for them to cross contaminate themselves (touch face/nose/eyes) and get an infection in their eyes.

My kids had that goop in their eyes one time - we believe it was due to an ear infection. Came on one day, found the ear infection that day, began treatment and it stopped. I'd call your DR.

You are right, all of our parts are connected. "Gooey" eyes are a common symptom of a sinus infection.

The antibiotic that your daughter is on may not be the right one to treat the type of bacteria that is causing her infection. I would call her doctor. He/She will know what antibiotics your daughter has had, what has worked with her in the past, and what the best option for another antibiotic would be based on what isn't working.

Good luck!

About a month ago, my boys both had the sinus infection. But they also had ear infections and bronchitis. My youngest son had gooey eyes at the time too. So, when I finally got them into the pediatrician (after being snowed in our home for 2 days), he said that the eye infection was because of the congestion with the ears and the sinus. So, the doc gave him an antibiotic eye drop along with the antibiotic for the ear infection/bronchitis. The eye infection will not go away on its own...she will need the antibiotic eye drops. She won't like them (even though it won't hurt her), so you will have to hold her down for a couple of times. But, make it fun for her and she should like it after a couple of times. I would count it out for my son (who is almost 2 1/2) and say, "One, two, three (drip eye). Blinky, blinky!" So, after about two doses, he was excited to get the eye drops. :)

Hello A.,

When I get sinus infections (I get them semi often), I often get stuff coming out of my eyes. The sinus & tear ducts are connected, so when the sinus cavity is full, it has to go somewhere.

As long as your child's eyes are not red (pink), it sould be OK. If you daughter also has red/pink eyes, go back to the doc, it may be pink eye. Ugh!

Just so you know, your daughter's eyes will probably seal shut while she sleeps, and when she wakes she will be scared, because she cannot open them. You may want to wash her eyes right before she wakes or have a warm wash cloth ready.

Good Luck!

Check with the doctor but I know your sinuses have ducts that also drain in your eyes. I get that when my sinuses are bothering me and congested.

I heard somewhere that a lot of times with sinus infections and kids that a seeping eye could be a symptom since there is not proper drainage and the sinuses are right there by the eye cavity. Are her eyes red? She could have picked up pink eye at the urgent care???? I wouldn't think there would be a new symptom but i swear with kids anything is possible. If her eyes get red though or wake up glued shut I would take her to see her ped or pcp for pink eye.

It's possible she has allergies. I would make an appointment with your regular pediatrician. Also, some bugs are just resistant to medication and they might need to put her on a stronger anti-biotic. My almost 4 yr old had an ear infection for like a month and had to go through 2 different courses of antibiotics to clear it up. I'm now trying to find a pediatric chiropractor, as they have been showing that children who see a chiropractor, even from birth are less likely to have sinus and ear infections throughout their lives. Hope she gets to feeling better!
