Showing- Now How Do I Get Some Shut Eye????

Ladies,

It seems to have happened overnight. I am at 15 weeks, pregnant with my first and while I had gained some weight in the first trimester in this past week the "girls" are noticeably bigger, and I've begun to show in the belly.

This is lovely, but however do I get some sleep? I used to be a belly sleeper. That's out of the question. I had been sleeping on my back, but that isn't really working. Now my belly rests on the bed when I sleep on the recommended left side, and it takes serious effort and momentum to shift in bed, or out of it.

I've heard that pillows can help. Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

I used the snoogle and loved it - best investment I think. I even used it after for breastfeeding by wrapping it around me.

A growth pillow was the best investment I ever made. Get an S shaped one so you can move it around to where it suits you best. I put part in between my legs, one my stomach rested on (which I believe even helped prevent me from getting stretch marks, since gravity wasn't pulling it down), and the other I rested my shoulders on. I got mine from a pregnancy website; but I believe maternity stores sell them also. I slept like a baby throughout my entire pregnancy.

I suggest the long body pillows as they are long enough to support the head, snuggle up to, and as you get bigger, put between your legs. Unfortunately, it's all just part of it. Have fun and good luck.

I slept with a pillow between my legs and on either side bc my ob said anything other than flat on the back was cool. I never got any special pillows. Sometimes I stuck a pillow behind me, sometimes under my belly. One thing that happens when you are preggo is some broken sleep. You might wake to pee and then re-position yourself or just wake up a little, reposition and then drop back off. I have always figured it is just one way you get used to the night waking that happens when you have a tiny newborn:) Toward the end of each of my pregnancies I practically evicted my hubby from the bed because I would end up surrounding my whole body with pillows! In my first pregancy, I used to just tuck a pillow under one of my hips and just sleep sort of on the lean to one side because my hips couldn't take all that pressure all night. In my second I couldn't breathe unless I was on my side completely and my hips just had to deal, so it is even different each time. Good luck getting comfy and congrats!!

I love my Snoogle pillow and am still using it even though the last baby is 16 months. But a regular body pillow and a pillow between your knees will work too. In the middle of my pregnancies I was okay sleeping on either side but at the end it was much better on the left because of heartburn. At the end sleeping propped up in a semi sitting position ( like in a recliner)may work too.

In pregnancy, you should not lie on your back for extended periods of time. Your left side is the ideal sleeping position. If you dont' own a body pillow, I recommend getting one. Doesn't matter what type. I got when when I was pregnant with my first, 15 years ago, and while it's been 11 years since I have last been pregnant, I still own and love one!

The full body pillow was helpful to me. I was huge and had a lot of back pain, pelvic pain, inner thigh pain. I couldn't even lift up and turn over without pain for 3/4 of my pregnancy.

When I sleep in bed I have to sleep w/ a ton of pillows... I am 30 weeks now & sleep more on the couch. I sleep on my back, but I use 2 pillow & the arm of the couch to keep my head up... I guess I almost sleep sitting up - kinda like you would in a recliner chair. If my feet are really bad I also put a pillow or 2 under them to help the swelling.

But honestly - with all 5 of my pregnancies, the best sleeping position has been different. I wish you luck in finding the one that works best for you!

Pillows definitely work for laying on your side.

The left side is best, however I was never comfortable and laid on my right side (I was a belly sleeper to).I used a plain pillow inbetween my knees. I also made my husband give me a back rub after a nice warm bath. Do somethings to relax you. I hope you get some sleep, but as Expat Mum said think of it as preperation for the sleep depervision you will have when that bundle of joy shows up :)

I bought two body pillows at like Walmart or somewhere. I didn't spend the extra money on the special pregnancy pillows that BRU sells because they seem pretty similar to me, except with a $40 price difference. Put one against your front, under your belly stretching down to between your legs. Put the other tightly against your back. Then, if you need to roll over, just switch the positions. If you're noticing back pain in the mornings, you might also consider getting a supportive nursing bra, which will help with the growing "girls" as well.

And take heart. About the middle of the second trimester (usually around 20 weeks for me), this pain starts to go away as you become used to the extra bulk, and in my experience it stays away for a couple of months, until you get really big and sleeping again becomes difficult. Good luck.

Any body pillow is a must right now. Tuck it under your "girls" and belly some so they aren't just hanging to the side thanks to gravity. It will help you to be more comfortable.

Good luck!

Check out pregnancy pillows (link above). I have heard they really help. I was broke when I had my first so I just used regular pillows stacked around me. My poor husband eventually had to move to a different bed! The pillows did seem to help, but I imagine had I had one made for pregnancy it would have been even better!

Good luck! Let us know what works!

From the body pillow link that was posted below, I would suggest the Snoogle. That is what I have, and the only way I have been able to sleep for these two pregnancies. If I could just get rid of these allergies, I could even sleep with this pillow at 38 weeks.

I tried multiple pillow with my first.. but they just shifted during the night and were hard to keep where I wanted them. With my second, I bought a "body pillow". You can pick one up for less than $20, and the pillow cases for them are about $9 at Walmart. It made a HUGE difference for me. I also was a tummy sleeper. Well.. gaining almost 50 lbs during pregnancy put an end to that pretty quick. Even though I lost all the weight and kept it off after both pregnancies... I still rarely sleep on my stomach any more. So, you will get used to that aspect over time. A body pillow will help with the transition, and also help your hips not ache so much if you push the end between your knees.

I got a pregnancy pillow from target - around $50 I believe. It's kinds shaped like a giant cheeto. It supports your head, back or belly, and legs. It worked very nicely. It's big, so you need a big bed and/or a tolerant spouse, but it's worth it to help you sleep. I kept it after I had my little guy, and when I tweaked my back recently, I used it again and it helped my back feel better. Definitely worth the money :)

Pillows never worked for me; in fact I was never quite sure where to put them. Main thing is, it is uncomfortable to sleep and when you're at the end, almost impossible to get in and out of bed. I always joked that the pragnancy sleep problems were just preparation for the sleep deprivation to come once the baby actually gets here.
Don't sleep on your back. Not only will it become almost impossible once you're bigger, but the vena cava, (a big vein) can apparently be squashed by the baby and cause problems for you.

Pillows.

Lots of pillows.

Prop one between your knees, one under your hard and another on to hold on to to give the feeling of sleeping on your belly.

Just wait until you get bigger!

I was a belly sleeper too. That ended quickly because early on it felt like I was sleeping on a grapefruit - I don't even think I was showing yet! I went from belly to back and then to my side. I may have slept in a comfortable bra or tank tops with some support for the girls too. As I got bigger sleeping on my side, I had a wedge-shaped pregnancy pillow that I could support my belly with, and I put a regular pillow between my legs to help my knees and hips. Really, I think my biggest surprise about sleeping and pregnancy was that almost from the beginning I had to get up and pee a lot - I think I always assumed that came from the baby resting on your bladder. When I did get up to go to the bathroom, I wouldn't turn on any lights, I tried to stay as close to a sleep state as possible because I'm one of those people who wakes up and can't fall back asleep. I figured this was training your body to getting used to no sleep for when the baby comes :)

Experiment with different pillows!
Good luck!
