Should He Be Drinking Water?

I have a 6 month old son. He refuses to drink water. How much water should he be drinking? Any ideas on getting him to drink it?

What can I do next?

At 6 months old, properly mixed formula with maybe 4 oz of juice mixed with water will supply all of his fluid needs.

My oldest was a little over weight and her ped put her on a diet with I always regretted listening to him about it. He said to give her water in between feedings, however she didn't like water. I did water down her formula. My other two kids didn't start drinking water until after year old, and still don't drink it too much. However, my niece was also a little over weight and her ped told my sister to give her water in between feedings, my sister nurse until she was 15 months. My niece to this day loves water, she would drink it in her bottle, and now she's 11 years old. When we go out to eat, even if the meal comes with a drink, she'll order water. I wouldn't worry about him not drinking water right now. I'd strongly promote it after he turns 1.

Nope, no water yet. Only breastmilk or formula! You're good, dont worry.

They get everything they need from Formula or Breastmilk. Sometimes I give my 5 month old half juice/half water just for a change and he enjoys that.

I am not a DR but I did not give my kids water at 6 months they got plenty in breast milk and in formula bottles that I mixed with water. My sister told me I needed to be giving them water bottles, I tried and they would not take them. My DR told me that there was really no reason for them with their baby food, cereal and milk/formula they were well hydrated, and if I saw any signs that they were not hydrated enough such as in the summer give them juice watered down. My boys are now 9 and 5 healthy and drink plenty of water now.

I was told that they did not need water until after they turned one. They should be getting all their liquid from breastmilk or formula. (You don't want them getting a full belly off of water that has no calories because then they may not drink the breastmilk or formula.) I would talk to your Dr. though.

Our ped told us no more than an ounce or 2 of water until he was bigger - that their kidneys can't handle too much water when they're smaller. I wouldn't force it on him - wait a few months and try it in a sippy cup.

We were told no water until 6 months. Between 6 months and one year it should be very limited, such as for learning to use a sippy cup or when the child is constipated. Even then, only a couple of ounces a day, certainly not an entire cup. So you are fine with him not drinking any. My son never drank water until well after his 1st birthday. My daughter is 7 months and she will occasionally drink a little out of her sippy, but only a few mouthfuls.
