Seeking Recommendation for Marriage Counselor

I am looking for recommendations for a good counselor, psychologist or therapist located in the Montgomery or Frederick County areas to help me with some marriage issues I am having. Has anyone seen someone they really like or was productive for them? I am a little intimated and overwhelmed by the extensive selection. Any suggestion would be appreciated. :)

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
I'm a counselor (adolescents not marriage, sorry), but my husband and I went to a great counselor that we found on the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapist's website www.aamft.org or www.therapistlocator.net The latter website is part of the AAMFT website and will help you to find a counselor in your area. There are a lot of counselor's out there, however they are not all certified to work with couples or families. If you are religious going to a pastoral counselor is your choice, however they are typically not certified in this area.

When you set up an appt, ask the counselor questions before meeting with them such as how long they've been working with couples, how long they typically meet with couples (short term, long term), and any other personal marriage issues that you would like to work on. If you're not feeling comfortable right away with that person, keep looking, you don't want to meet with that person just to find out you don't like them/feel comfortable talking with them. Also, have your husband be a part of the search so he feels okay with it too. My husband preferred meeting with a woman, but many men will prefer a man. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!

My fiance and I went to a marriage counselor who worked wonders for us! Her name is Kathleen Smith. She is in Silver Spring. The website is www.silverspringtherapists.com. We only had to see her a few times after she taught us the communication skills we needed to make our relationship stronger. She is great and I highly recommend her to anyone seeking some couples counseling. Also, if you have children, they have a play area in the office for them..its great!

L., Do you attend a religious place of worship anywhere? And if so is there an elder couple that you respect and feel that you can trust that have a good marriage? This is what so many of my dear friends and my husband and I have done.

Deborah Ward is Great! She is really helpful and non-judgemental. If you'd like her number just sned me a private message and I'll give it to you. She is located in Montgomery Co.

This is what I did...I contacted New Life Live. You can find them on the internet also. They have a radio program every day at 1pm on WAVA 105.1. They have a very large network of therapist all over the country. They can help you decide which one will best fit your needs. They helped me and I am very lucky in the counselor that I have. If you are not familiar with this group they are the Docs who wrote and do the seminars on "Every Mans Battle" for pono addiction and the "Loose it for Life" seminars. Just google New Life LIve and you will be able to get the number.Even the people who talk with you to figure out what counselor would work best for you are licensed counselors.

Hi L. and Happy New Year to you. I was reading some of the responses, and I couldn't wait until I saw someone ask if you had a religious place of worship. L., let me tell you this sista - Seek the face of Jesus and his kingdom He will direct your path. Trust his word, invite him into your life, he's the best counselor you'll ever get! Most therapists have therapists of their own, have no control in their own homes, don't waste your money! Pray to an almighty heavenly father you have access to 24/7, it works! God is a big God, he can do it all. This may sound like yeah right, easily said than done. If you've tried any and everything else, why not try Him, girl it's the best thing happening. Call From the Heart Church Ministries @ ###-###-#### and ask for assistance, they should be able to help you or direct you in the right path! God Bless you!

L., I think it is so great you are moving in this direction. Years ago when my boys were newborn and two, my husband and I were so tired, so overwhelmed we seemed to fight constantly and there was great strain. We went to our family Dr. together, explained what we were experienceing and asked him to refer someone really good to us, he did and she is Dr. Joan Lindhardt, but she's in Herndon, VA, not near you, but was amazing. She ascertained what was up, made it clear what we needed to do (find a great sitter and simply get out to talk, etc....), we went every other week for about 5-6 months and everything got fantastic! Still when we are at a 'fork in the road,' we go see Joan, she calls it check-ups! So, good for you and if you have a close relationship with your family Doctor you might think of asking him/her for their recommendation based on your personalities. Good luck, it's a great thing to do for your marriage! A supportive reader.
