Seeking In-depth Knowledge of IVF W/little Egg Production

Hi Everyone,

My best friend just had her 5th IVF attempt. The Dr's are telling her they will try one more time, but say it's pretty much not going to happen because she just doesn't have any eggs. The place she is going seems to be not the greatest to me. They have been really rude to her, discouraged her from talking to the Dr's but only meeting with Nurses, etc. So, I am appealing to all of you for two reasons...Can anyone tell me someplace where I can find information about the lack of egg production? Also, if anyone knows of any IVF places that might specialize in low egg production to give her just a little bit more hope? Thanks Everyone!

What can I do next?

Hello S.,

Every baby girl is born with a fixed number of the eggs (about 2 millions) - all the eggs she will ever have. The number decreases rapidly to about 400,000 in girls just before puberty and later in life it keeps decreasing (only healthy eggs can be selected for fertilization).
So it can be that your friend does not have many healthy eggs left.

But you are right - the situation at the clinic she is attending looks strange. She definitely should consult in other places with other doctors.
Good luck to her!

It's ridiculous that she is being treated this way - it is disrespectful and disheartening. Where is your friend located? I had great infertility treatment. There is also a nationwide organization called Resolve which deals with infertility issues - I'm sure there is a chapter somewhere near her. Let me know.

It sounds like maybe she should go to another fertility center. Or, if she's ready to consider other options for starting her family, I highly recommend domestic adoption.

I, to, had few eggs and 5 failed attempts. Three years later I have a beautiful happy, healty 2 1/2 year old and an adorable, busy 1 year old who light up my world. I got my first when he was 2 weeks old and my second at 6 weeks old. "Giving up" was the best decision I ever made. If your friend decides to be "done" like I did, please tell her there is HOPE and so much love and joy waiting for her even without "labor."

Please forward this to her and let her know that my thoughts and best wishes are with her.

Hi S.. How are you? You are a good friend to seek out this info!
I went to the Boston IVF Center in Waltham and saw Dr. Penzias (male). My problems were FAR less complicated then your friend's, but I found him to be very helpful. He said he would help us have a baby - exploring all options, including adoption - if that is what it came to.
Also, I had a friend who donated her eggs to another friend so she could have a baby. Technically it was not her biological baby, but it was her husband's, and she got to go through the experience of being pregnant and giving birth. So not sure if your own friend knows about trying something like that.
Hope this info helps!

HI S.,

My husband and I went through infertility treatment at UMASS in Worcester, and then went on to RSC- Reproductive Science Center in Lexington. I had a very positive experience and ultimately became pregnant through IVF- All I can say is that your friend may want to try a different facility/doctor, they may have a more aggressive/different approach or specialize in treatment for low egg count. There are many resources out there too... Resolve is a good one!

A little about me:
I am not an expert, just someone who wanted to be a mom more than anything- I have a healthy 11 month old boy
