My son is now 16 months, and has had diahrrea for 3 months, no vomitting, no other symptoms, we have done the brat diet, no milk, probotics, stool samples, sweat test. And nothing is giving us answers is there anything else I can ask or do, I feel so bad, half of the time they are explosive that he has to be changed because they go through his diaper and cloths. Please help...Thanks in advance.....We have also tried him on the high fiber diet, as well as a high fat diet, also no juice for a month. He is only drinking water and milk. And he is always thirsty and they cut his liquid intake down. He is seeing a GI dr now through all childrens. When it all started we took milk out of the diet and it didnt help, we even tried soy and it still went on.

What can I do next?

It sounds like an allergy to me. Does he have wheat and gluten. If so, try cutting them out totally for minimum of 2 weeks and see if there is no change. Difficult, but worth it. Worked for my son - he eventually outgrew it. Good luck!

Did you take ALL dairy/soy out or did you just take out milk? You must do all or nothing for 3 weeks. It might be egg or wheat as well. Take him for NAET testing to see what he is allergic to. Blood tests are not accurate nor are scratch tests.

Have you tried a clear liquid diet for a few days? Do that and then the BRAT diet. You need to give his colon a rest, and clear liquids is the only thing that will do that. NO FOOD. Breast milk only, if you are still nursing.
That is a long time to be dealing with diarrhea. Your poor baby :(

In addition to seeing a pediatric Gastroenterologist, I suggest you seek (they are hared to find) an Allergist that will test for food allergies and food sensitivities. Food sensitivities for myself and my niece and nephew raised un-holy havoc with our digestion which included diahrrea, abdominal pain, esophogeal ulcers, pyloric valve ulcers etc....

Has he been checked for Celiac Sprue also called Gluten Intolerance.
This ailment can raise all sorts of problems and is relatively easy to manage.

I'm wishing you the best in your search a solution. Poor little guy, I feel for him, as I've been in his situation.

Hi M.. Sorry for what you and your little one is going through. Some thoughts:

1. How is your water? Mineral? Bottled?
2. What about trying goat's milk instead of cow's milk. It is easier to digest and has less antibiotics. If goat's milk is of help -- there is goat's milk yogurt, cheese etc.

3. Lots of bananas.

4. White bread rolls. I read a study from Britain that we need to give our kids white bread in addition to wheat bread for the reason that they need not to have everything fibrous.

5. What kind of meats is he eating? Does it have a great deal of additives and water added?

Is it possible it could be gluten intolerance? It causes bloating in the tummy, lots of gas, and diarrhea.
I developed this a few years ago. I could notice a different feeling in my stomach after eating something like bread or pasta. Since he is so young he can't tell you how he feels but maybe you can try foods without gluten for a few days and see if it makes a difference in his bms.
I don't cut out all gluten but I find substitues when I can, and it made a big difference. ( Meijers has a huge selection of gluten free )Mine was not as bad I think as some people with celiac. I believe from how I understood it, celiac is more of a gluten allergy, which is more severe as opposed to just an intolerance.

Has he seen a GI specialist? Perhaps there is a blockage?? or constipation, which can lead to diarrhea. Have you eliminated wheat, gluten, barley, oats? Have you tried more fiber is his diet? You can give him rice water, boil rice in lots of water. Cool the water down and let your baby drink it, without the rice to hydrate him. Or you can include the rice, too if that is okay on his tummy.

Sounds like youre taking the right steps but you need to be consistent with one thing at a time to try and eliminate...parasite testing is a great idea, I demanded my dr test me for parasite also. I have a family history of IBS and chronic diarrhea. The brat diet worked for me and stress and dairy are triggers. You should ask them to check his aborption also. Make sure he doesnt have intestinal problems. So sorry you and your lil guy are dealing with this, its just plainly sucks.

Okay, many will find this offensive and disgusting but have any of the specialists tested for parasites? Parasitic infections are very common in humans...more so that most will admit, even doctors. I encourage you to do some research on parasites and request testing for them.

A gentle detox that is safe for kids is Cell Food. It's a liquid supplement for juice or water. There are also homeopathic and herbal remedies to help cleanse the body of parasites.

Best of luck to you. I'm sorry your little man is going through this.

Peace & Light,
J.

Things that cause diarrhea:

Milk - lactose intolerant (my mom and husband have this problem)
Juice - more that the recommended 1/2 cup (my 4 year old has this problem)
Constipation - if you are extreme constipated, then only liquids can get out (My son had this problem).

Here is a website that list other causes as well. (It includes those I have already listed as well):

1)Anyone who would cut anyones fluid intake when they have diahrrea is an idiot, and you may quit listening to them immediately. Have him drink, encourage him to drink.
2)I don't know what probiotics he has been on, but the best I have found is Simplexity's, for children bifidus is better, because it has the proper ph for children.
3)With his blood type check EatRigth4 Your Blood Type, and there you will see the foods he should and shouldn't have. This book was well researched at Bastyr Universtiy- this is not a fad diet book, serious science.
2a)Sometimes it requires very large doses of probiotics, these are capsules so you just open them and put it what someone is drinking. By large amounts I mean 10-15 capsules at a time is what could be used. The simplexity has all the minerals he may now be short on because of how long this has gone on.
4)You have tried good suggestions, well done on that. Please do not let anyone cut anything out of him- if you are given that "solution"- RUN
5)Next - what happened 3 months ago? Was he weaned then? Started on solid food? Exposed to? Take a look, and see if you can determine what the change was.
6)What kind of milk is he drinking- pasterized homogenized- if it is- get him off that pdq.
7)Weston Price. com may have some help , and I have been told there is a chapter in Tampa, so that would be worthwhile tracking them down. They are brilliant in seeing what food is out, because most certainly something is wrong, and the correct answer has not been located.
best, k
