Seeking Excellent Carpet Cleaner
After doing major renovations the carpet on the stairs and hallway turned from beige to dirty grayish. We will replace as soon as possible but I can't live with it looking so dirty. Does anyone have suggestions on a strong cleaner? I am almost ready to put bleach in the carpet cleaner.

If you are eventually going to replace the carpet anyway....you could just rip it up. A friend of mine recently ripped up the carpet on her stairs and painted the floor with floor paint. But I just noticed you said hallway too, so don't know if that would help....

I do not recommend bleach!! it is toxic and will stay in your carpet. I recommend Stanely Steam Master. They did a great job on our carpet... I also do not like the idea of Chem Dry.... they just put a chemical on the carpet and then vaccuum it up a few hours later- yhew.
Best of luck!

I would rent one of those carpet cleaning machines from the grocery store (Kroger). We used that to clean our carpet when we first moved into our place. Then, we poured the hot soapy liquid down the bathtub, and it cleaned the dirty bathtub that the previous owner did not clean as well! I think it cost $20 plus the cost of the cleaning solution to rent. Happy cleaning! :)

CAPTURE Carpet Cleaner sold at Home Depot. It is a powder that you can clean your whole house with and takes minutes instead of hours to dry; since it is not soaking wet when you are done.

My carpet used to horrible. I tried all kinds of name brand cleaners and professional carpet cleaners. I finally found Pro Master Carpet Cleaners ###-###-####. They did an excellent job not only cleaning my carpets, but deoderizing them as well. They also added scotch-guard to my carpet and my upholstry. Ever since, I have had NO PROBLEM getting anything up (including spaghettios...) with any cleaning product whether it be Woolite Oxyclean or Resolve. No matter what...I would suggest a professional cleaning WITH scotch guard. It has made my life easier with two dogs, a cat, a two year old AND my husband!! EXTRA NOTE: If you do decide to use a machine that you rent...BE SURE TO GET ALL OF THE SOAP OUT OF THE CARPET. Apparently, I didn't when I used one once and was told that was a major problem in attracting more dirt.

J.,
my husband owns Prestige Services Carpet Cleaning and is a certified master carpet cleaner. I called him to ask what you should do. He said DO NOT use bleach!! He said the gray look could be from ground in soil or it could be from wear. He wasn't sure of any home remedies you should try, but he did say the vinegar that someone else mentioned wouldn't hurt the carpet. Peroxide and greased lightning would probably mess up the carpet depending on what is is made of. He said you are welcome to call him and will see if he can help you. He said for me to give you his cell phone number: ###-###-#### his name is Kent Hartshorn
Just tell him that his wife gave you his number.
The office number to Prestige if you would rather call that number is ###-###-####
Hope this helps some.

What I do (and it works on almost every stain I've had to get out) is boil water on the stove and mix the hot water with vinegar in the carpet cleaner. For bad stains I pretreat by putting the boiling water directly on the stain and scrubbing before using the carpet cleaner on the whole floor.
I have tried the commercial chemical cleaners and nothing works like good ole vinegar... this is a much cheaper and healthier solution too.
