Seeking Cloth Diaper Classes/seminar

I am wondering what classes or seminars might be out there in Chicago regarding cloth diapering. I know Be By Baby has a seminar, but they have a waiting list for all the dates before my baby comes so I am trying to find some alternates. Does anyone know or did anyone attend such a thing to learn more about what is available out there? Thanks for any help!

What can I do next?

Hi,
I'm hosting one on August 14th. The owner of Love Bugs Co. is teaching it, she was very helpful when I made the switch so I am hoping to help other moms out too. I live in Lakeview, let me know if you are interested.

Hi S.,

My experience is ancient -- my boys are 19 and 22 now!!! -- but the cloth-vs.-disposable debate was raging back then too. I stayed home and was thrilled with diaper service (Dy-Dee I think) because they were reliable and I never had to think about washing or disposing of diapers. I still believe it's more ecologically responsible to use cloth. I did use disposables when they went to daycare (I worked part-time) but I felt cloth was cheaper as well as better for the little bottoms. So my message is skip the class, sign up for service, and if you find it isn't working, just drop it!

Best regards, enjoy that baby!!!!

hi S.! if you can't find a seminar soon enough, i'm happy to answer specific questions about cloth diapers. my son is 8 mos old and we've been using them since he was about 4 weeks old. i LOOOOOVE them! we use fuzzy bunz which i highly recommend. we took the class at be by baby and those were by far the best choice presented in the class. happy to share more - i think they are in the top 3 of baby must-haves!!

S.,

I never took a class, but just did it! I used the old fashion diapers as well with safety pins and plastic covers. There is a website www.cottonbabies.com that sells cotton diapers and wipes that are very easy to put on that you don't need a class ( no safety pins). I believe it also has a book. My friend uses bumgenius and loves it. The upfront cost seems pricey, but you will save money in the end by not buying disposable. Newborns can go through 10 diapers a day! Be sure to put on a moisture barrier for the babies skin (vaseline, balmex ect.. to prevent diaper rash. For cleaning I did what my mother did: get a diaper pail and baking powder. Put the dirty diaper in the pail and shake some baking powder on it. At the end of the day soak the diapers for 20-30 mins with Baby Oxy-clean and wash. Since I breastfed there wasn't a problem with poops. They typically came out very well. If it was not clean at the end of a cylce I simply soaked the diaper one more time. It was really very simple. Once you go to solids you need to clean the poopy diapers more throughly before washing. Good luck!

Congrats on your upcoming birth! I found www.diaperpin.com to be really helpful.

There are also several yahoo groups about CD (cloth diapering) or you may want to look into a local AP (attachment parenting) group where you are likely to find other CD parents.

WHere are you located?

Hi S.,
Be Bye Baby in Roscoe village (the corner of Addison and Lincoln) offers cloth diapering classes. Their store is great - tons of interesting and unconventional baby items. I have been cloth diapering since my son was 4 months old so if you have any questions let me know! Congrats on your first little one to be!
