Seeking Advice on How to Deal with a Stubborn 19 Year Old After Tonsillectomy

My brother recently had his tonsils out, he is 19 and I never thought that he would be such a baby about the pain from it (from reading others posts i now know that it is in fact very painful), but he is usually very good at handling pain, not much bothers him, but not in this case. Because he can usually handle pretty much any pain (he broke his wrist and left it alone for a couple weeks because we were moving and he wanted to be able to help), he doesn't believe that he needs the pain medications. Instead he insists on smoking, just as he did before the surgery. Apparently it helps for about 5 minutes and then it gets worse again.
is there any else other than (or on top of) the pain meds that can ease the pain?
and is smoking cigarettes or weed a bad idea shortly after a tonsillectomy?
and I'm wondering if there is anything i can do to help him, tonsillitis runs in the family both parents had them out as children, and my little sister gets it quite often and he is scaring her. is there anything i can tell her to ease her anxiety (she has not yet been told that she needs them out but is absolutely terrified now that she might have to and she will suffer the same as him).
thank you so much for any advice or information you can provide.
i k now that i am not a mother but i hope that you will or can help me anyways

what medications should he be on? they give him i think lortab or something like that.
and thank you for all your advice

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice. I stole his cigarettes (could not find any weed in his room) and placed some tylenol 3's in place of them. I have gone out with my sister to give him time to get sick of whining to himself.

How much longer does the recovery take? he was asking.
dear Dawn. thank you that is very good to know. we have told all of his friends that he can't have visitors, hopefully this way we can control what exactly he gets his hands on.
dear k.n. at this point i don't even think that he filled his prescription :( i will ask if he can get liquid meds, thanks for the tip. He is going a bit nuts without cigarettes though, hopefully he gets over that soon. i feel really bad for him because i know that he isn't used to feeling a lot of pain, he punched the wall earlier because he couldn't swallow a T3.
should i be worried if he has a warm forehead?

If he's smoking ANYTHING, no wonder he's in agony! Smoking irritates the throat, so basically he's doing something akin to pouring salt in a wound by smoking because he has two sores in his throat where his tonsils were! Seriously -the smoking has to stop. Also, after any type of mouth or oral area surgery, sucking on something from a straw to a cigarette can cause lots of pain, tear stitches, etc. I'm quite sure the doctors and nurses went over this with him, and he's chosen to ignore it. Tell him if he wants to lessen the pain, he's going to have to leave off the cigarettes and/or weed for awhile.

Honest to goodness I had to re-read your post where you said he is SMOKING AFTER A TONSILLECTOMY! How can he bear to do that?

If I were you I would back off trying to "help" him and let him know you're not going to listen to whining if he isn't going to consider what the doctor suggests regarding the pain. And I'd love to hear what the doctor would say about the smoking.

Wow.

I would tell him that if he's not going to follow directions and doctor's orders and help himself, I am not helping him, either, and I don't want to hear it. I would be especially mad if he didn't follow directions and was now scaring my little sister!

You can tell your sister that should she need surgery, she will heal better if she follows doctor's instructions and takes her meds and gargles and whatever else she might be told, unlike your brother.

My daughter had hers out at a similar age (20, maybe?). It's VERY important that he keep drinking cool to cold fluids. Not only does the cold temperature help temporarily numb the pain, but keeping the throat moist will inhibit any hard scabs from forming, a big source of the pain after the first couple of days (especially when swallowing). If I remember correctly, he should try drinking something like 8 to 16 ounces ever hour. You might want to check with his doctor or a nurse in the office for guidelines on this.

Pills are difficult to swallow. Any chance of getting him some liquid pain med? As others have said, smoke will increase his pain.

My daughter had a really hard time with this for the first week or so. As for your younger sister, tell her it's not bad for younger people and is more difficult as people get older, like your brother, and that how you deal with the recovery (proper use of medication, following doctor's orders, remembering to drink cold things & eat popsicles and such even when you don't want to) will make the recovery much easier. Tell her it'll hurt a little, but smart people who do the right things hurt less for a shorter period of time. Or, as my dad always said, if you're stupid then you suffer. She can learn from your brother's experience that listening and following directions can be the smart thing to do.

Still -- no matter how smart, this hurts. Patience, cold things help -- and good for you for hiding any kind of smoking material

Oh, BTW -- alcohol doesn't count as a "cold drink". The alcohol burns like crazy, as do the bubbles in sodas. Go for juice, iced tea, smoothies, etc.

Hang in there -- both of you.

Lortab is hydrocone and is a narcotic and a controlled substance. Regardless of your stance on marijunana he SHOULD NOT mix these drugs. Lortab is serious stuff.

He is 19, he needs to act like it. Yes, he is in pain. Bad horrible pain. He needs to go talk to his Dr about alternative pain management. Maybe find an herbologist or a DO if he doesn't want "meds".

Other than point him in the right direction I wouldn't do anything else for him.

Don't ever assume anything about "someone else's pain". If you can't deal with your brother....stay away for a while.

Blessings....

It takes two to three weeks. Also when he gets up for the first fifteen minutes he needs to take a sip of water every 30 seconds. My kid's dr. had them do this and it helped. Also the more fluids he drinks the better. As for pain meds he's better off with his prescription. Tell you sister because your brother isn't doing what is needed to minimize the pain, it's worse than normal for him.

It is a very painful recovery and the smoking will be terrible for the surgical area and could very possibly PROLONG his recouperation. He definitely needs to take meds as prescribed and eat exactly what they said to do. Tell your sister that he's being stupid with his treatment after the surgery and that if she does what she's supposed to (IF she has it done) then she'll have a sore throat but will be okay in a few days. Big brothers can do some really dumb things and hopefully they are learning a lesson from it!
