Seeking Advice on Birth Control Options

Do any of you moms out there have an opinion on IUDs or other non-hormonal birthcontrol options? I have an 8 week old daughter who I am breastfeeding, so I do not want to go on The Pill even though I have had good experiences with it in the past. My husband and I have 2 beautiful children so we are most likely done, but we don't want to do anything permanent yet. My OB recommended an IUD, but I'm not sure if it's the option for me. I don't like the idea of using condoms every time my husband and I have sex, though. Any thoughts out there?

What can I do next?

I have never used an IUD myself, so I cannot comment on the like or disklike of this option. On the pill, not using it as directed we conceived our 2 and 1 year old. Thereafter, I have decided to go back on the Depo Provera injection once every 3 months, which I previously used for 8-9 years. The only problem is easy weight gain, you must keep excercising with better nutritional diet. You have no periods.

You can take the progesterone only pill with breast feeding, that is what I did. I don't know about IUD. Breast feeding is a natural way of birth control, but it isn't 100% and I believe you have to be nursing every 4 hours arround the clock to make it work.

I have the Mirena IUD & think it's great. The first couple of months I spotted sporatically but now have no period though I know that can vary by individual. I think the IUD is an option worth you looking into.

Mirena contains hormones as well. I have a hormonal condition and didn't want to disrupt what I so diligently have worked to fix on my own. Therefore, I was seeking a birth control method that didn't contain hormones. That left me with the copper IUD, the diaphragm and condoms. I was going to go with the copper IUD, but found out that the reason it works is because it causes an inflammation in the uterus.. so that was out for me. Boyfriend didn't want to use condoms every time and so that left me with the Diaphragm. Which for me would work since we have to plan our times, but it does take away from spontanaeity.

I have mirena. This iud has been O.K. but you may have to get the strings cut if it pokes your hubby. You may also have some issues with it shifting. I have heard many women have had no problems and this is great if you don't like using condoms. Just make sure that you check into the risks. I haven't heard a whole lot bad about the iud's myself and my ob gyn had one herself and she was the one to recommend it to me. other than that you may want to check into the patch. It worked well for me also.
