Seeking a Reasonable and Good Orthodontist

An orthodontist suggested by our dentist, advised retainers and then braces for our 9 year daughter. Our part of the expense comes out to almost about $8,000 for two rounds of braces - one now and the second one a little later. I have a few questions for all of you out there who have been in my position: (1) I am wondering if this is about the standard out of pocket expense for braces/retainers? I feel this is a little too much (2) Do you have any recommendations for a good orthodontist in the Almaden area? (3) Do you have any advise on getting it done now versus waiting to get it done when she is a little older.

Try getting an evaluation from Dr. Nancy Gum. She's at 3535 Ross Ave, not far from the Almaden area. She was one of two orthodontists we consulted when my daughter was about your older girl's age. She recommended we wait (the other wanted to start full-on treatment right away) and two years later, said it was time. Our portion worked out to around $5K, but of course the cost depends on what treatment is needed. I just feel she was very honest about what was needed instead of just getting another patient and their money. Braces will be off in a few months now and I've been very happy with her. Drs. Stanley & Nancy Gum (father & daughter), 3535 Ross Avenue (medical complex behind Beverly's Fabrics on Hillsdale). ###-###-####
Dr. S. Gum treated my two youngest sons and myself and did a great job. The work he did on my teeth was to correct the incomplete work another orthodontist had perfromed prior. Dr. Stanley Gum is the former President of the N. California Orthodontic Association. Really knows his stuff. Nancy joined the practice nearing the end of my families ortho care, but she appeared to be every bit a competent as her Dad.

not in Alamaden but we have had great luck with Dr Daniel Hall in Los Gatos

I am glad parents are questioning all this and "feel this is a little too much". My parents got scared into a huge course of orthodontia for me, and it was really painful, took up huge amounts of school time, and was out of control.

We just started the whole ortho treatment for our twin daughters. A little overwhelming. I had some education in the dental field so some of the info I understood and so I went from there. I opted to go to about 5 different offices and get their opinion. Most of the consultations were free of charge. Some gave similar advice and yet others were completely different. I did not inform the orthodontists that I was getting other opinions until after they gave their advice and then I asked questions about what the others had said. I then talked with our daughters and asked where they felt the most comfortable, but I still made the final decision. I chose an office that was a provider with our insurance and we received a greater discount. We have been doing this for about a month and a half. It is an experience that I am sure will be very beneficial. Also, you can always yelp orthodontist online which I believe is people giving their opinion about different offices and or orthodontists. Good Luck
