Science Activity Gift for a Preschooler?

My 3-year-old son has always had a strong affinity for numbers and technology, and I'd love to get him a Hanukkah present that involves actual science experiments. Are there any toys and/or homeschooling materials that allow children (with parents, of course) to actually conduct safe, easily comprehensible science experiments? My son can do some activities (e.g., jigsaw puzzles, building model trains) that are targeted to more of a kindergarten level, so I'd be comfortable looking at things designed for slightly older kids.

Thanks, and Happy Holidays to all!

Hi M.. I know this is late, but I figured I'd give you my idea even if it's not for Hanukkah, but just an experiment to do. Last year we ordered a butterfly house and they sent catepillars to us. There were 5 of them and we were able to successfully "grow" 5 butterflies. It was great. the kids loved it. I had my kids keep a journal of the progress in a notebook by drawing pictures of the size of the catepillars. They grow super fast. The only thing is that once the butterflies were born I felt so bad for them being in that little house, so we let them go, but it was spring. just an idea for the future. :) I don't know where you live but there is also a Lakeshore learning center in East Brunswick, NJ off of Route 18 next to the DMV.

Hi M.,

Try Lakeshore learning located in Hackensack, NJ they have great education toys. I get so many things for my preschool there. If you are not close by the go to the website www.lakeshorelearning.com. There is also a less expensive website I use www.discountschoolsupply.com. I believe if you spend $79.00 you get free shipping. Happy Holidays!!

Hi,

Have you been to the Learning Express or Lakeshore Learning? They have lots of great educational toys. I'm sure you'll find one in your area. Or Google educational toys and buy onlnie (the best way to go). Happy holidays!

Also, I have heard from many moms that Wedgits are a great toy for his age range. In fact, my friend is buyung them for my daughter for x-mas. They sell them at Amazon.

if he likes building things, one of the best toys are magnatiles and magneatos. they are both expensive, but they are nearly indestructible and very safe too, and he will play with them forever. bendaroos are good too. tangrams are great, and build math skills.
