Scarlet Fever - Canton,MI

My daughter was just diagnose on 7/25/10 that she had Scarlet Fever. Her rash is very itchy and I wanted to know what I can put on it, so she is not constantly scratching at it. I feel so bad for her. She has been up since 5 this morning because it itches so bad. Also if any other mothers have gone through this, how long did it take before it cleared up? We caught it right away, but you never know. Thank you in advance for the advice.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I want to thank all of you wonderful loving mothers who responded to my question. I appreciated that SO much!! As for my daughter, she is doing WONDERFUL!!! Just a couple days after taking the medicine, she was feeling better. She ate her first solid meal today (Tuesday) and her rash is going away fast. It's a little pink still with bumps, but it is nothing like it was the first day. She is on a fast recovery to being better. Her itching was only for about a day and an half, and then it started to go away.

Again thank you everyone for you advice! I will keep it for future problems. Much love and appreciation!!

I've never actually known anyone to catch rubella, thanks to vaccinations, but I do remember having chicken pox as a kid and my Mom using aveeno oatmeal baths on me for the itching. I think you buy it at any drugstore and add it to a lukewarm bath.

benedryl and some type of topical cream like hydrocortisone cream. I know when my boys get poison ivy the aveeno oatmeal bath helps with the itching. It comes in a box.

D.,
They have topical cortisone w/ lidocaine at any drugstore. Will help the rash and numb the itching. You might want to call the Dr. and see if you can give her benadryl. My heart goes out to you.

I had Scarlet Fever as a teen. Have you tried Cortaid? Also, did your doctor prescribe an anti-histamine, along with an antibiotic? If not, Benedryl may help. If I remember correctly, she will be highly contagious for 48-72 hours (or until the antibiotics take effect), and usually the rash will be going away at that point.

For more immediate relief, you may want to try a bath with baking soda. It helped my daughter when she had chicken pox.

Before you use anything topical to help with the itching, I'd definitely either call the pediatrician or consult a pharmacist. Depending on what antibiotic the physician prescribed, you may have a contraindication with something topical (meaning they can't be used together) which will lead to more issues instead of helping clear things up......even Over the Counter items.

Unfortunately, Tea Tree Oil hasn't been FDA approved for any medical conditions in the US. I've been researching it for the past year because of its uses in Australia for head lice, and there's no research in the US to show it's beneficial. It's quite expensive, and because it's not monitored by the FDA, you have no way of knowing if it interacts with other prescription medications.

You'll probably be OK with Benadryl, Cortaid, etc. But, please call first to confirm it's OK to use in conjunction with your present treatment.

I was not able to find anything on MayoClinic's website nor HealthyChildren.org to address the rash/itching:

Get the aveeno soothing bath with oatmeal, it comes in individual packets in a box, and let her soak in that. It is also good for chicken pox and various other rashes. The oatmeal will help with the itching. Once she is on antibiotics, it should start to clear up within a couple days. Good luck, and let the poor thing soak to her hearts content. (when my son had chicken pox, oh so many years ago lol, I couldn't get him out of the tub!)

I would call the pediatrician and just ask if you can give her Benadryl, and what the doseage is. Also, Oatmeal baths or Calamine lotion can be helpful (when my son hat chicken pox he loved the oatmeal baths).
good luck!

None of the suggestions below are contraindicated for any antibiotics. They are commonly suggested by doctors along with a myriad of antibiotics for other conditions (I'm thinking Sinus infection, Bronchitis, Pneumonia etc). I don't know of anything topical that is contraindicated with antibiotics (but I'm not a doctor either). Benadryl you don't want to use cream AND orally, but other than that abx and topical creams really don't interact.

All of the other suggestions below are good ideas -- different things help different people with different rashes, you may need to try more than one before she gets that "AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH" feeling. For more natural remedies, the oatmeal bath, a water/baking powder paste, or even a t-shirt soaked in vinegar may help.
