Roaming Baby!!

Hi Moms, my daughter has always been a difficult sleeper but over the past 2 months she has been sleeping 11 hours at night (yay!). However, she has recently mastered the art of turning over from her tummy to back (but not back to tummy). She is a tummy sleeper, so now everytime she wakes she flips over and wakes up and cries and cries until I come in anc turn her around. She gets herself squished into a corner and can't get out of it. I know I'm not supposed to "rescue" her but she is not physically able to get herself out of this position so I really don't have any choice because she ends up squished in a corner with her neck bent sometimes (she isn't crawling yet). The problem is that she really wakes herself when she flips and when she sees me come in she's more awake. This has been going on for a week and she's doing it about 5 times a night - I'm exhausted!! Any advice?? I know this is a phase but I can't wait weeks for her to figure this out on her own without some sleep :) By the way, this is not a baby where CIO works - she will basically cry until she vomits and I'm not good at implementing it :) Thanks!

What can I do next?

Sounds like she needs more floor time during the day to master rolling in general. Place her on her tummy several times each day for atleast 5-10 minutes and lett her explore movement. She needs this skill to be able to sit, walk and roll. A.

I'd get her a futon to sleep on and put it on the floor with blankets or other padding around it to catch her when she falls off (the 6 inch futons are so low that it won't hurt her to fall off). Maybe she won't be able to roly poly herself into a corner if she has a bigger space!

She probably won't fully wake if she could sleep with you, I find that to be the case with my daughter. It's hard to go back to sleep after release of those fear/alarm hormones that get signaled when they can't find Mom.

Good luck and keep on working on that sleep solution! There IS a solution out there...

Best,
J.

J.,
Maybe if you rolled up a blanket and put it next to her she would not be able to flip herself over while she is
sleeping.

Work on rolling back over with her in the day and try a sleep positioner at night. Believe me, I know it's hard, but this will pass before you know it!

Dear J.,
If she's in a crib, have bumper pads. They make things that are baby safe, but keep your little one from getting "stuck" in the corners or between the mattress and rails.
Practice "flipping" and rolling front to back during the daytime and eventually she will just automatically be able to do that for herself when she rolls around at night. As soon as she masters that...you will both be sleeping much better at night.
Best wishes!
