Does anyone out there have RLS aside from the pregnancy-induced RLS? I am not yet a mom, but desperately want to be. However, I am on Mirapex for severe RLS, which is not approved for pregnancy. Has anyone found anything better, SAFER? I literally cannot stop shaking and twitching without Mirapex, and therefore will not sleep or even be able to SIT for 9 months without that medicine. I have tried going off it, to see if I can do it. FAILURE!!! I was shaking so bad 10 hours later, it was unbelieveable. I couldn't even go one day. And the disease progressively worsens as life goes on. HELP!

So What Happened?

About the calcium, I heard about that too. I take extra calcium, just incase, as well as magnesium, which is also indicated. Iron is involved, too.

But I guess my RLS is severe enough to not notice any of these helping. I still do take them, just incase, as I said, but...

I will have to look for that cream, though. I would love to get off all chemicals, even for my own sake, but especially for my (someday) baby.

THANKS!

Oh, and YES! It is like soda bubbles, or electric pulses. UGH!!! Not in your head at all.

I already take magnesium. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

And I only tried to go off the Mirapex once, and it was so bad--RLS symptoms--that I couldn't feel any Mirapex symptoms, if there were any. This also happens if I take a pill late, because of forgetting.

HAR! Beth, it is funny you should mention that sex helps. It does!!! Yes, I am looking for an OBGYN now, which is why I came to this site, even though I am childless at this time. I needed some advice on the best OBGYN in the area, as well as if I was alone with Mirapex/pregnency issues. THANKS ALL!

Hi Caroline:

I can totally relate....My legs tingled and jumped....I spoke to many M.D.s about it and they would say it's just poor circulation. I was very frustrated and searched extensively on the internet and library as to how to deal with my legs. I found (Vein-Guard) at a local Vitamin/Nutrition store. It's a cream that you rub on your legs morning and nightime and my legs feel normal again. I'm not sure about pregnancy issues.....but, it's all natural so, I would think it would be safe for the baby.

Anyway....good luck with finding what works for you

I have never officially been diagnosed with it but the best description of what I have is .... it feels like soda bubbles running through my legs when I lay down. I can not sleep no matter how tired because my legs feel like they want to run a marathon. I never got any medication for this but I did hear a few years ago that taking extra calcium before bed would help. I started doing this three years ago and the only time my legs "acted up" since is when I forget to take the calcium for a couple days. My Dad told me it's not really helping and that it's all in my head...I told him I don't care, as long as I get some sleep (plus studies have shown that most women don't get enough calcium anyway). It's worth a shot.

This is going to sound so bizarre, but I have read on numerous occasions from the doctor in the news paper advice column. He has said and there have been many people that have written in saying that it works. It is a bar of soap under the sheet I do believe. I was wondering, ,my mother in law takes Mirapex for Parkinsons and when she tried to go off of it she had really bad side effects from it. I was wondering if you had the same problems. I know it is a little off course. Sorry

When I was pregnate my doctor had me take magnesium ( sorry I cant spell) suplements. I would not do it with out asking your doctor first but it really helped me. I also got the really bad craps in my legs that would wake me up at night in tears but the magnesium helped that as well.

I have occasional RLS but not like you are talking about. I am super high risk for other health problems during pregnancy though. What I did before I got pregnant was see an OB and got referred to a Parinatologist (OB specialist) to discuss options and medications. There were things I had to do before getting pregnant to ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby. Also talk to the Dr. that you see for your RLS and get lots of opinions so you will feel good about your decisions. I would also consider talking to a Ped. and see what they have to say about how any med will or could affect your child.
Best Wishes,
J.

I had pregnancy induced RLS. I took nothing but as a result got very little sleep. It sounds like what you have is way worse. Has your doctor suggested anything?

I want to tell you my heart goes out to you. I have suffered from RLS since I can remember. I now have 4 beautiful children and still deal with it. I am on no medication for it because it usually only happens close to my menstral cycle right now. I am concidering it because I am now done nursing. I only found out what it was when I was pregnant because I was going crazy and could not sit or sleep. I also had pre-term labor...totally unrelated to the RLS but it make bedrest a nightmare. My doctors at the time knew so little about RLS that he said to take Benadryl...not knowing any better I did...needless to say for RLS antihistamines are a big NO.

My advice to you is to see a OBGYN before you start trying. I pray that there will be some answers for you. I feel your pain and sleepless nights.

The only thing that I do remember helped when I was pregnant is Hot Baths...really Hot. I did have to be careful because you are not supposed to overheat during pregnancy. It was some releif. Oh...and sex. for some reason that actually helped...especially if I went right to sleep after. I really wish I could be more help. I will definitly keep you in my thoughts...Good Luck
