I was recently laid off of work and am 9 weeks pregnant. I do get my health benefits until Aug 31st, 2008. However, everyone is telling me I won't be able to get health insurance with the next company I work for b/c I already have a pre-diagnosed condition. Does anyone know what I can do about getting fully covered since I am not due til Jan 09 and am learning that having a baby is verrrry expensive. I can apply for COBRA in Sept but not sure if they will cover my pregnancy and they are very expensive. Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

If you call Plan Parenthood they will be able to give you the number to an angentcy that will be able to help you get Medical quickly. It might take a month but you will also be able to go to Grossmont or some where esle to verify everything. With my last pregnancy I was in a simular situation and they were able to help. If your medical was Kaiser as long as you were a member six months or less ago they will take you on as a Medical member. Also if you were wanting to switch to Kasier if you have family that has Kaiser they will take you on as a member. I hope that this info. helps please let us know.

I think that as long as you don't have a lapse in coverage, they can't deny you for pre-existing conditions if you were to get new coverage through a new job.

A.,

I recently went through the same thing. My husband lost his job with benefits so we were on cobra. Usually if you can collect benefits from your job, they also MUST provide Cobra insurance. This coverage is the exact coverage you had with the company, however you have to pay the premium. We had to pay 1,200k per month! After that runs out (18 months) some companies allow you to enroll in Cal Cobra. You will have to check on whether they have that plan.

The pre-existing condition clause only applies to individual insurance policies. If you are working for a company with Group insurance, you cannot be denied coverage. So, as long as you keep those things in mind you will be fine. Good luck.

I experienced the exact same thing with my pregnancy. You will be forced to use Cobra due to your pre-existing condition. I know it is expensive . I thought I could get other insurance too but after tons of research I had to go with Cobra. Good luck.

You can also look into Healthy Families or Medicare. I believe there are resources out there for medical care, specifically for women who are pregnant without insurance. I would look at www.healthyfamilies.ca.gov as a starting point and also talk to your current doctor and explain what your situation is, they will most likely have resources for you.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! You will be covered at your next company without a problem. I was laid off while I was 3 months pregnant, I started my new job (didn't tell them, you don't legally have to) and was able to start up the new insurance without a problem. I beleive there was a question on the form asking, but they could not deny me. So I had a little secret with the HR lady who processed my forms until I felt ready to share (almost 6 months, I just wore baggy clothes). The first day I wore maternity clothes that showed my bump there was some surprised people, but that was it. Never did the insurance company question me or try to not cover me. This happens all the time.
About COBRA, my goodness is it expensive! I was shocked, I hope that I never have to use it.
So don't sweat it, I am sure you will find a new job soon and be back in business. In the meantime, try not to stress for the baby :)

COBRA is continuation of the exact same insurance you currently have. So if it is currently covered, it will be on COBRA. The only difference is that you have to pay the full price plus an admin fee, around 4% and sometimes you have to speak with a different rep to get questions answered. I was on COBRA when I was laid off and found myself pregnant days later. Everything went fine... it was just really expensive, but cheaper than no insurance and the peace of mind of being covered was reasurring.

As far as getting a new policy, I thought it was illegal to deny someone for a pre-existing condition, but I've been out of the business for a while. I thought they have to have plans, just more expensive. Good luck with your research on that and congratulations on your pregnancy!
