Reccomendations for Good Children's Books

My little guys LOVE any of Sandra Boyton's books. Espcially Pajama Time...the rhyming is fun. (Beware, they will get stuck in your head though!)

Also, my guys like thier childrens Bible. The story's are short and filled w/ good conversation starters!

my children have love Dr. Suess books since they were little babies! rhyming books are supposed to be especially good for building a child's language skills. my kids also love all the board books such as "first words", "first numbers", "first dictionary", etc. (the kind where they just have pictures and a word labeling each picture). just remember, even if your baby wants to just look at the pictures, not listen to the story, you can still point things out such as colors, animals, shapes, etc. and she will soak up all that information! and try not to get impatient if she wants to read the same book 10x in a row, repetition is an important part of language development.
used book stores usually carry like-new copies of books such as Dr. Suess for about half the cost of buying them new. if you don't like the idea of previously-owned books, try a store like Ross that sells new items for a discounted price

When my first son was born over 6 years ago, my sister in law gave us a collection of Curious George paperback storybooks (Curious George Flies a Kite, Curious George Goes to a Chocolate Factory, etc). There must have been 15 books and she also gave him a stuffed Curious George. Those books have always been my son's favorites and my 4 year old daughter has now loved them for years as well. Being paperbacks, some have gotten ripped up and taped and re-taped and finally had to be recycled but the kids have loved the stories from the time they were read to them to my son reading them all on his own.

I started my children't library before my first was born almost 7 years ago. Classics like Dr. Seuss, If you Give a Mouse a Cookie, and Nursery Rhyme books are great. My daughter learned how to read off of Dr. Seuss because of all the rhyming and most of the words are pretty short too. The books my kids always reach for first though are those put out by Usborne. They have excellent picture books, board books, and story books and most of them are non-fiction. You can buy the books at www.ubah.com
They are a little more pricey but worth every penny for the quality of the books. These books will still be around for your Grandbabies. You can host a show to get books for free or discounted or sign up to sell to get them too. (and no, I don't work for UBAH).

Here is what we do...my son is three and a half. We go to the library...(some branches have better children sections than others)...and check out about 8 to 10 books every 2 weeks. We read 4 or more of them everyday and by the end of two weeks there are some favorites and occasionally a huge hit.

I write down the name of the huge hit and know that I will then buy that one for our home library.

Look for authors like Bill Martin, Jr. (these are fun), Eric Carle (educational), Patricia MacLaughlin (love the way she uses words)

You have a lot of good suggestions here. But I wanted to add Mo Willems to the list. He's a modern author with some GREAT books and stories. We love him.

I also like "That Special Baby". Someone gave it to my daughter, and it's a good way to talk about the fact that she grows up and gets bigger.

My son always loved books where you lift the flaps. He's 6 now and our new favorite book is a "story" about being in you Mom's belly. Written very well not graphic at all. The books mentioned are excellent books to build a library. When we moved to Texas I only kept the books he loved and we read over and over. "Corduroy" and Dr. Seuess, We have been reading a book about manners. I wish you luck. M.

The Sweet Pickles series are cute...(they are kind of old) You can get 'em at amazon.

Also, Richard Scary books...we loved those as kids. They are wonderfully illustrated...really gives the ole' noodle some exercise.
