I am the Mom of 2 boys currently in the K.C area and my husband is making a move in his company to Gary,Indiana. I already know that no one actually wants to live in Gary. Any info on small towns, schools, youth football and temporary housing would be wonderful. I found this out yesterday and think we would be in the area by September. After living in 6 states in 7years there is no network better than mommys. We have 2 boys 11 and 3.

What can I do next?

We just moved to Lowell, IN. I love it. It is a nice small town but still big enough to have youth teams and great schools. If you need any other info. please email me. Good luck with the move!

Can I suggest Valparaiso? It's about as close to Gary as Crown Point--if you use the toll road. When I moved to North West Indiana from Louisiana 12 years ago, we moved first to Crown Point (actually Lake of Four Seasons in Winfield Township). When I found a job in Valparaiso, my husband was driving to Gary, and my daughter was going to high school in Crown Point, it got insane. We moved to Valparaiso and have loved it! With a great college it has a more cosmopolitan feel and less provincial air than Crown Point. Lots of amazing restaurants, theaters, etc. The Parks department is wonderful with lots of athletics for the boys. And the Valpo schools are tops in the state. You can email me directly for more info. ____@____.com

Hi, L.! Crown Point is a wonderful little city! If you live within city limits, you'll be able to walk to any downtown location! I was raised in CP and moved to Lowell last year. I have to say I miss CP terribly! It's my plan to one day make enough money to afford a house in CP again! Not that Lowell's bad, but you really can't safely walk or bike anywhere in Lowell (either there are no sidewalks or the sidewalks are in terrible condition ~ you'll sprain your ankle when you walk around here). Schools in CP and Lowell are excellent! Both are very family-friendly communities. Schererville, Dyer, and St. John are also excellent communities, but they share 1 school system. It's quite a bit over-crowded from what I hear from friends who live in those communities. Good luck on your re-location!

We needed temporary housing as well and we ended up in Griffith. We found an apartment ( i know no yard :( ) BUT they do month to month and 6 month or year leases. We are in a 2 bed 1 1/2 and they are pet friendly for our dog and cat. Last night was the first parents meeting for pop warner and practice starts on Monday. I am not sure when there first game is but I know there is still time to get on a team. If you want any more info on this please get back to me. :) good luck on your move. ____@____.com

Crown Point is a nice town and the schools are pretty good. Make sure if you move to Crown point, the house is not in Ross Township - If it is your kids will not go to Crown Point schools, but to Merrillville schools. Other towns with good school systems: Lowell, Valparaiso. I have also heard Boone Grove school system is good (it is much smaller than any of the others) Some houses in Valparaiso and some in Hebron are sent to Boone Grove. I suggest speaking with a realtor about wanting a good school system - they should know. Good luck!

While Crown Point is wonderful, make sure that you find out about the real estate taxes. Lake county is really socking it to us! You might consider moving into Porter County or unincorporated areas!

I was born and raised in Crown Point. The community there is wonderful and the schools are great. Crown Point is going through a huge growth spurt right now, so now is the time to buy there. I think you'd be very happy in C.P. Once our child is school age, we are moving back to C.P.

http://www.crownpoint.net/ is a link to things around town.

http://www.cps.k12.in.us/ link to school system, you can view all the school here

My kids are in Jerry Ross and Winfield schools, and I am very pleased with both schools (one is k-2, the other 3-5, this may change back to k-5 in the next few years)

Crown Point is growing, there are homes in all price levels. Like someone previously said, there are a lot of festivals in summer, the Lake County Fair, etc. If you have questions, please feel free to email me privately and I will do my best to help.

Of course, there are many other nice communities here, but I am partial to CP cause I live here. :)

Hi L.,
crown point is a great place to live. The schools are good, the athletics are good (and competetive), and it's a generally clean town. They have a town square that holds different types of festivals throughout the year, it's close to the city of chicago (but far enough from the hustle and bustle of it, too), and it's close to lots of shopping areas. The lake county fairgrounds are also located in crown point and they also hold different types of festivals and events throughout the year. There are plenty of sub-divisions in c.p. That accomodate all kinds of income levels. Winfield and lakes of the four seasons are 2 very affordable and newer sub-divisions that have great homes. We are currently looking to buy something larger, as my family is growing again for the 4th time. We have been looking at homes in lakes of the four seasons (lofs) and winfield and have decided that that is where we will end up. If i'm not mistaken, i believe that they have a school of their own, but still in the c.p. Public school system. I am very big on my children getting a good education and have done much research on the schools in lake county. Munster (where i grew up and went to school) has excellent schools. The town of munster is nice, but you can get so much more for your money in the c.p. Area. There is a nice hospital in c.p. Called st. Anthony, and if you are looking to have more kids in the future, their birthing center is wonderful!!! That's about all i have to say now that i've rambled on. Sorry it's so long. I hope all goes well for your families move. You guys will enjoy northwest indiana. Overall, it's a pretty decent place to raise kids. Good luck, and god bless.

We just moved to Griffith about a year ago, which is near Gary and we love it for the most part. We have great neighbors and there is a lot going on in the area all the time.

We happen to live in the low area and our street floods every time it rains hard, but this seems to happen just on our corner for the most part. I would suggest talking to neighbors in the area and find out about the neighborhood and any problems with flooding.

It really is a great neighborhood. Not sure how much you are looking to spend but I would suggest Munster as well.

I live in Valparaiso. Chesterton (close to 80/90 toll road) is also very nice and they have good schools. I had my daughter at St. Anthony's hospital in Crown Point and they have a very nice downtown...just filmed a Johnny Depp movie there...don't know much more about it. NWI can be a great place to raise kids. I am a memeber of the MOMS Club of Valparaiso and there is also one in Chesterton, not sure about Crown Point. There are lots of resourses and groups for moms. I grew up in Valpo, but moved around a lot as an adult and we are now back and raising our kids here. It was easy for us to make new friends moving back. There seem to be a lot of relocations in this area. Someone else talked about parks, we have lots of new shopping and good restaurants. There is a large homeschooling community as well as good schools and private schools (Montessoris). There are surronding smaller townships also that have good schools and the taxs are less than in the city limits in some areas. Also, you can often find houses for rent in the Washington Twp area and I have seen them in downtown Valparaiso as well. Chesterton has a smaller town, arty feel. Another plus is Valpo Univers. has a good supple of quality babysitters when school is in session.
