Rash When Son Eats Solids

Hello,
I have a six month old baby boy, and we recently introduced solids. He has tried sweet potatoes, peas, butternut squash, and bananas. I was wondering if it is normal for a baby to get a little red on their bottoms after trying solids for the first time. At first I thought it was a specific food, but then it happened with all of the above. Has this happenend to anyone else's child? Maybe his system is telling me he isn't ready yet?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks everyone for the advice! I have just decided to wait on all solids for now. I will slowly reintroduce them in a month or two.

My children did the same thing whenever I fed them anything acidic. I just tried to change their diaper as soon as I could. I also used Bag Balm on their bottoms to help protect/heal the rash. Bag Balm is in a square green tin. It is the best thing for diaper rash ever.

I had this same problem with my foster daughter and ever time we tried a new food she would do this. our doctor said it is a reaction to foods and she was not ready for them. she would get blisters and very bad diaper rashes. we had to wait to start solids until she was 8 months old and even then we had to do bland baby food we made. if we had to use baby food it had to be organics or foods with out preservatives. She is now 13 months old and doing fine. I would suggest talk with his doctor or pediatrican and then may be try one food for more than 5 days then move on. we did new foods for two week and then added on. this worked for us. if you have more question then you can ask but it is always best to ask doctor and go with you instinks. I know we use lots of corn starch mixed with putrolum jelly for rash this worked at every diaper change.

Sometimes when starting solids they can get a bit of a diaper rash just because the ph of their stools change due to the new foods. This USUALLY has nothing to do with allergies, but to be on the safe side you should always start with a single grain cereal for awhile and then introduce each food one at a time giving each a couple of days at least to watch for signs of allergies. Good luck!

2 of my 4 had this a little bit. New type of foods in, mean new type of waste out. These foods are likely more acidic than anything he's been having thus far. If the rash is on his bottom, it's probably from the new stuff in his poo. Try a topical ointment. Watch him for other reactions. If anything gets worse, check with his doctor.
Hang in there! Lots more fun to come.

There's no reason to introduce solids just yet. You've started with all the "right" foods, but maybe he's just not ready.

However, just a tiny bit of red on his bottom is a pretty mild reaction, and my baby's all got that from time to time & I never worried about connecting it to foods. Maybe just use a little A&D & call it good.

Please ask your peditrician this could be a food allergy and some are very serious.

Per my pediatrician, I started my son on cereal first, tried each new cereal a couple of weeks apart. Later when I added other foods, I gave each separate new food a couple of weeks to be sure there was no reaction. My ped & nurses said a reaction could take a few days to get through his system, so introduce separately to check foods individually. It could be that combinations of new foods are not reacting well and he just needs more time to adjust to each one.

I was told to start out with one at a time of the solid foods. It could be also if you let your baby drink orange juice or other juices. I found out with my baby he was alergic to the diapers. Maybe feed him some oatmeal during the day as well as the sweet potatoes. If I am not mistaken it may be that those have some vitamin C and they will cause. I also found that rinsing with water and rubbing some lotion on their back side helps between changing times. Hope I am of help, CS

It might not be the foods. Does he drink orange juice...or a lot of a juice. My son would get a rash on his bottom when he drank orange juice. Too much acid in the juice.
