Questions About Excema/ringworm?

My son has had a rash on his face for about a month now. It looks like circle shaped red spots that started with just one on the side of his face by his left eye, then has traveled down his face under his chin and up the other side of his face. He has about 8 patches all together. I have taken him in to the doc twice, both time differant doctors. The first said it was ringworm and had me put a anti-fungel cream on it for about a week, nothing happened so I took him back and the second doc said it was excema and to put hydro-cordoson cream on for 4 days then follow up with Eucerin cream until it goes away.....did that and he still has it. It has started to scale up so I think it's getting better then the next day it's red and full blown. It does not bother him at all, he does not itch it or even know it's there.......does anyone out there know what this may be? I am so confused and not sure what action to take next. Anything helps.

What can I do next?

My son went through the same thing, I battled it for a year, If its ringworm, you have to do the anti-fungle for atleast a month, My Dr. had me to half of the rash w/anti-fungle and half with hydrocortizonem if its ringworm the hydocortizone makes the rash worse, then nothing really worked after all that, i brought him to an allergist and they did skin testing, he is allergic to the glutens in wheat/oats and thats what caused the excema, after we came up with a care plan the rash went away pretty quickly, also babies can become allergic to the lanolin in eucerin

My son has excema also and I also tried all the different things dr.s told us about, however I have found something that has worked, atleast for my son. A&D ointment. Now you want to get the cream, and not just the ointment. I dont know what the difference is but it works great. When he has a break out I give him a bath and dry him off then put the A&D cream on his splotches and it goes away.

Like Brandi K responded before me, my baby had the same problem and we cleared it up in a few days with Elidel and changing to Aveeno creamy bath wash. My baby had it on her face, though. I hope this helps.

if your son does have eczema, it's possible that it can get better with the cream but if you haven't eliminated what's making him break out in the first place, it will never go away.

my daughter has eczema and it wouldn't go away until i stopped feeding her eggs and dairy. once i did that, it cleared up. an allergy test will tell you if and what your son is allergic to.

oh, my daughter's eczema never bothered her while she was young either. now that she is 4 (and outgrown her food allergies), she still has flare-ups due to dry weather which she tends to scratch. if i keep her lotioned-up after baths, the spots tend to stay away.

good luck

p.s. i think they're now reporting that elidel can cause cancer in infants so make sure to do your research before you use any meds.

If it is excema, there are some products out there specifically for babies. Yes it does take constant attention. My son had it and finally grew out of it my daughter also has it. We put on a product called little faces or Johnson & Johnson makes soothing naturals. It comes in a stick form to apply. I put it on every day.

my daughter had sores on the back of her leg also and started getting it on her arm. the first doctor which wasnt hers said to put hydrocortisone cream on it. but then it didnt go away so we took her to her dr and she said it was excema. so she prescribed Elidel for it, to use it 2 times a day. It is almost gone. My daughters sores looked the same as your sons. I was also told to change her bath soap and lotions also. So I use the Aveeno Bath wash and lotion (uncented). When I was using hydrocortisone cream at first my daughter would scream because they said it actually burns before it starts to cool when you put it one. Elidel you dont use for long periods. It cleared my daughter up in like 4days.

hey C., the next time you go back to the Dr. or maybe you can just call the last Dr you went to, and specify that you already tried what he/she suggested and it did not work and ask if you can get a prescription for "Elidel (pimecrolimus) cream 1%. its prescription only and I have tried this to my son when I exhousted all the non harsh creams I could think off when he had the same ringworm like red patch on his face. After the first two aplications it was gone and until now 31/2 yrs later it never came back.

It sounds a little similar to something my mom has, they believe it is an allergy to flour. Maybe having some allergy tests done will help clear things.

Have you introduced anything new into his diet? Could it be an allergic reaction to something? Perhaps a sensitivity to a new laundry soap or lotion?

Another suggestion is a possible nickel allergy. My daughter also has eczema but when she was an infant every time we put her in anything with snaps she would get clusters of perfect, round, scaly circles the size of a snap. Took us a few times to figure it out as it looked like ringworm to us. Does he sleep with anything that might have a snap or something else made of nickel? Like a pacifier holder or snaps on the shouler of whatever he wears to bed? You might be able to test it by putting something on him that has a snap on the shoulder or something like that and see if he gets the rash there too. Just thought I would throw it our there. Hope it helps.

If it is excema or dry skin I have some spa quality, naturally based products (like Aveno but a better quality)that I use on my son with dry skin. Our Nourishing Moisturizer works perfectly on my brother without a perscription. I have samples available if you would like to try...depending on what they decide it is! Frustrating isn't?

Ihave ringworm and the doctor said it takes as long as 6 weeks for the antifungal cream to clear it up. I'm on week 3. It's fading but definately still there.

How long since you started the excema routine. My granddaughter has eczema and it takes constant attention to keep it under control once it's under control. Hydrocortisone cream did not get it under control for her. There are other prescription medications for it and that would be the next step if you've been working on it with hydrocortisone for a month or so. We used the hydrocortizone cream for several weeks before switching to a prescription.

If these spots are only on his face and doesn't itch I would question that it's eczema. You didn't say which son has this. Both of my grandchildren when they were babies had rashes on their face which were diagnosed as eczema although my grandson's rash was worse on his face he had some scaly skin other places. My grandson's complexion cleared up as he got older. One suggestion was that the more severe rash was related to his slobbering and smearing food all over his face when he thru that stage the rash went away. In the meantime the cortisone cream kept it to a lighter rash than if we'd left it alone.

I recommend continuing with one doctor who can then see what is happening with each treatment and try different options or say give this one some more time. Much of medicine is trial and error. Perhaps the second doctor is in the same clinic so that they can compare notes and that would work too.

Good luck figuring it out. It is frustrating.

Hi C.! Did the first physician take a little sample (just a little scraping) of the red spot and evaluate it under the microscope? Ringworm should be diagnosed under the microscopic. If not I would take your son to a dermatologist for a evaluation. My first guess is that he has ringworm which needs to be treated with an anti-fungal for longer than a week. If it is really eczema, Arbonne has a great product for eczema that is pure, safe and beneficial. Email me if you have any other questions! J.

I have eczema, and so does my oldest daughter. It took me a while to realize that she was scratching it in her sleep. I never saw her do it when she was awake, but I caught her at it when she was sleeping in the car. I started using Aveeno anti-itch lotion, and that seems to have taken care of the last little bit I couldn't get rid of with Eucerin.

My son had somthing that looked like what you are describing. I found it was just dry skin I would go in his room at night and put baby oil on it and it seemed to clear up.
