I bought this black flowing skirt that goes to mid calf and it has a pattern of white swirls on it, so it is a black and white patterned skirt. What kind of top should I wear with it? I am horrible at matching clothes and figuring out what looks good, and I don't know if I need to find a top that matches it, or should I wear a solid color type shirt.

A solid red or pink would look fabulous. Or, a solid black that closely matches the black in the skirt.
I have two skirts in similar color and they really are hard to match - but think outside the box. A pink shirt with no frills and some great black heels and you will look hot!
I would find a nice white shirt. If the skirt has a good waist and flatters you, find a shirt that looks good tucked in. A thick belt would be cute too, maybe a color like red with red earrings or something. =)
You can definitely go with any solid color top, but I would do a "pop" color like turquiose, yellow, or red. Don't do black on top, that's blah. Wear some cute flats or platform sandals, black would be good, you don't want to be too matchy, and you're ready to go.
I would go with a bright tourquoise fitted top, some chunky jewelry and embellished strappy sandals - kind of a chic, sexy hippy look :)
Red top would make everything pop and Patent Leather black shoes!

If it's black and white, choose a solid. It can be black, white, red, pink, whatever. Add a chunky necklace and sandals and you are all set.
You can also wear a thick belt with it - it will look cute.
Pink, peach, sky blue or teal would be beautiful... solid colored and very simple. Depending on your shape, wear something that is fitted to balance the flow and length!
Depends on the material of the skirt when it comes to the texture of the blouse, but I think a solid white or black top would be nice. Even a nice t-shirt would probably do, especially if you use jewelry to snazz things up. All silver jewelry or pick a solid coral or turquoise. I would put my color in the jewelry or wear sold silver or silver and white/black.
Are you sure you don't know anything about fashion? Black and white is the biggest trend for this upcoming season. In addition black and white goes with everything. The most important thing to try to match the fabrics to the texture. I would do nice and bright colors with the skirt with blazer, sweater or denim jacket for dress down fridays. Using a solid bright color that flatters you is nice with black and white. Don't use a neutral like brown or beige with a black and white skirt. You can match it with a black or white shirt and then do colored shoes at the bottom too. Definitely throw a color in there either in the top or the shoes.
Go red or hot pink solid for the top, wear black shoes.
Or go black top and use your pop of color in your shoes - red, yellow, pink - whatever your favorite color is!

Solid. I wouldn't go with black either. Funny thing, black is a really hard color to match.

Congratualtions, sounds like you made a fashion score! and you can dress this up or down depending on your choices ie. Tank and sandles, cardigan and flats or small heel. I would look on White House Black Markets website for ideas, keep them in mind when you are out. I buy most of my tanks at Old Navy. They have a huge selection of color, just buy one size down as they run big.
So, if you are talking mid calf it must be "tea length" so that makes me think something like a cardigan, button down shirt tucked in with a wide belt, or a well fitted sweater again with a belt or a cute embelishment in pretty much any color ... go for fun heels or strappy sandals or jeweled up flats.
Black and white are neutrals, so you can wear any color you want. Personally, I would wear either a bold color (solid or small print) or a grey, or white solid with a bold colored necklace or cardigan. Have fun!
I would wear a solid tank. Black and white are safe but orange or red would look pretty too :)
I have a skirt like that and wear alot of black and white. With my black and white skirt I wear:
solid black or white knit blouses, in all sleeve lengthes.
a black sweater tank with white sweater that has black embroidery on it.
black or white sleeveless shirt with black or white linen vest layered over.
I have several pairs of black shoes that work with my skirt, mules, sandals, pumps.
For me, the main thing to watch when choosing a blouse to go with my flowing skirt is to find something fairly form fitting. Anything too loose or blousy makes me look like a bag lady.
