Prime Rib Roast/Standing Rib Roast

I've decided to have my in laws over for xmas dinner and need advice in preparing either
Prime Rib or Standing Rib Roast. This would be my first attempt at preparing either of these entrees.

Any suggestions, recipes or preference of one vs. the other?

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions you provided.
I followed Tyler Florence's recipe at the Food Network for my Prime Rib. I had a 4 rib roast, close to 9 lbs. I had it in the oven (convect setting) for 3 hours at 350 degrees. It was superb!!!! Big hit with the in laws. Cooked perfectly, just slightly pink in the center. Awesome and very easy. Hope you all had a great holiday dinner.

I recommend Tyler Florence's Horseradish and Garlic Prime Rib Roast. Go to the food network, then Tyler's ultimate and you will find the recipe. I made this last weekend for some friends and they all loved it. I even think Jewel has a sale going on right now for rib roasts. Have a Merry Christmas and let us all know how it went!

We owned our own restaurant and I can share that Prime Rib is by far a favorite. Make sure you only purchase prime (almost impossible to get) or choice meat. Stay far away from select. Talk to your butcher to make sure you are buying choice! Good luck to you!

I am also making Prime rib for the first time for Christmas. I went to the Food Network Site there are a whole bunch of ideas there for Prime rib roast. I am going to use the one from Tyler Florence it is called Horseradish and Salt crusted Prime rib I watched him prepare it this weekend It looked so easy I know I can do it. The one thing that I have learned is after you take it out of the oven DO NOT cut it right away let it sit for at least 10 minutes Reason being the juices are all swelled up and if you cut it right away all the juices run out and only the first cut of meat will have all the flavor if you let it set for the 10 minutes or more the juices redistribute and all the meat will have flavor.
I have used alot of the recipes from the food network and have had great meals. Follow their cooking times and everything will turn out great. People tend to over cook meat. Use a meat thermometer. Have a Great Christmas.

I cannot say I could offer you better advice than the first answer!! Sounds very good!! Always cook the slowest and longest instead of quicker for a tender meat. Take out slightly earlier than you think you should if you do not use a thermometer. Very good advice about not cutting right away!! Prime rib is my favorite of all...have a Wonderful Christmas. L.

We have prime rib roast every year for christmas. It took a lot of either over or undercooked meat before I finally found a trick that works. All you do is set the meat out so that it's at room temperature when you cook it. You preheat your oven to either the lowest temperature it will go to or to the temperature that you'd like the meat to get to(check online for meat internal temperatures). For instance, we like our meat pretty rare so we use the lowest temperature which on our oven is 170. You can cook it as long as you want and the internal temperature of the meat will only go as high as the oven temperature. I usually put my meat on for about 6 hours at 170 degrees. It comes out super tender and delicous. Oh, and be sure and put the roast in with the fatty side up so it will drip down onto the meat and keep it juicy. I hope this helps.
