Dear Mamas,

This is V. from the UK. I have been browsing through the question and answers and found a lot of valuable information. This is a fantastic place to be.This is my first question in Mamapedia.
My preschooler had cold a week back and had a fever of 40 degrees celcius. We gave him calpol and he turned out OK next day. Then almost the same time the following week ( ie last tuesday 19th october) he had another episode of fever. The fever gets controlled with calpol and nurofen. However, he seems to have a low grade fever ( aroubd 38 degrees celcius). The doctor had a look at him and said his tonsills are inflammed and put him on a course of antibiotics. He also complains of stomach ache.
I am a bit worried.
Is there any advice for me?
Thanks,
V.

So What Happened?

Dear Mamas,

I would like to thank you all for your inputs.
Just as an update, his fever lasted for about 3 days ( ie tuesday, wednesday, thursday). Then we took him to the doctor on friday and she said the tonsills are looking much better, and he is responding to anti biotics. He is still on the course of antibiotics.
His voice is still nasal though.
Thanks and regards,
V.

I'd suggest using acidophillus with your child. Especially if you choose to use antibiotics. It keeps the normal flora in his system. Less chance for tummy aches. His tonsills do have a function. I'd suggest seeking out a consult from a homeopath or a naturpath. There are some in your area of Va. Feel free to contact me if you want a referral.

I hope your baby is doing better. Let the antibiotic run its course. It will take 7-10 days. I assume nurofen is ibruprofen and calpol is tylenol. You can give these alternately every four hours.
Lots of fluids, mine don't drink a lot of water while sick but they will drink apple juice or grape juice. They also like the yellow Gatorade.
Popsicles are good too.

When my son gets strep throat, which he gets 5-6 times a year he has very similar symptoms...stomach ache, fever (sometimes high sometimes low) the antibiotics help and usually within 3 days the fever is gone for good. Popsicles help his throat and also lots of fluids. Also Tylenol helps with the sore throat and stomach ache too. Good luck. Hope he feels better.

If the tummy ache doesn't have to do with the antibiotics, I would take him back to the doctor and get him tested to see if he has an infection.

was the tummy ache before or after the antibiotics? If after....the antibiotics could be the cause. Typically, diarrhea & upset stomach go with those drugs.....but it is very important to take them to cure the tonsilitis.

Both of my sons have had many rounds of tonsilitis & strep. Pump the fluids, serve soft foods....& he should bounce back quickly. Good Luck!

Sounds like strep to me.
The tummy ache is a classic symptom of strep. Sometimes you can have strep without classic symptoms - I did this past fall. Keep him on the antibiotics until they are gone. Push fluids and tylenol (or whatever you call it over there) to keep the temperature at bay. Make sure he gets lots of rest, too.

YMMV
