Pregnant Before Period After Having Baby?

Hi everyone!

I recently had a baby girl a little over 10 weeks ago (March 30) and I still have not had my period. I am not breastfeeding. With my first girl I had my period exactly 2 months later. I was just wondering if this is normal or if I could be pregnant again. I first had intercourse again at 4 weeks. At my 6 week appt. would the doc have known then? We have done it a few more times. I'm a little worried because with my last pregnancy I was on extra folic acid and baby aspirin for a slight case of MTHFR and I'm also hypothyroid. I'm still on my thyroid meds but not the MTHFR meds. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If I am pregnant so soon after having a baby is there any risks? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your responses. But I couldn't take it anymore I had to take a test this morning and it was negative. I know that God won't give us more then we can handle and I'm thankful for what He has given me already. Thank you all again!

I've had 5 kids and it was different after each and every kid whether I breastfed or not. I wouldn't worry about it too much. But, if you are concerned, just take a pregnancy test.

I think the earliest I got pregnant after having another was when my oldest was 5 months old. Typically the risks are possible miscarriage, but that's a risk for anyone no matter how soon they get pregnant. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I don't know anything about pregnancy during the postpartum timeframe, as I have always breastfed and have never gotten my period back before 1 year. With the twins, it was 20 months before getting it back..... I was worried that I was going into menopause at age 34!

I was also diagnosed with MTHFR after having a preterm baby and two pregnancy losses. They didn't have a test for it back during my first pregnancy, but did after I suffered the two losses. I was told that I needed to take the extra folic acid, vitamin B-6, and baby aspirin for the rest of my life, regardless of whether I was pregnant at the time. This is to prevent any microscopic blood clots that could affect me, not just the ones that could develop in the placenta during a pregnancy. You might want to ask your doctor about this, and if you find out anything to the contrary, please let me know too.

Thanks, and good luck!

Totally possible. I have full time breast fed all 3 of my children but despite that I have started my period at 6 weeks, 5 1/2 weeks, and 5 weeks post partum. That typically means I was ovulating at 4, 3 1/2 weeks, and 3 weeks after giving birth and therefore could have gotten pregnant at that time. If you had special medication that was required to help sustain your last pregnancy I would definitely recommend you go get a pregnancy test so you can start doing what you need to do if you are indeed pregnant. If you aren't, I wouldn't worry about your period not coming back yet. Sometimes it takes months for hormones to all settle out after giving birth.

Good luck!

It is completely possible that you are pregnant again, although I would have a test to be sure. I've known people who are pregnant at their 6 week checkup, but your doctor should have done a test then, so if they didn't say anything, it may have been too early or you weren't at the time. I don't know anything about MTHFR, but in general, being pregnant so soon after having a baby isn't dangerous. It just means that you'll have two babies barely a year apart, which would be stressful! So I'd talk to your doctor about your concerns, and ask for a blood test, which is more accurate and sensitive than a urinalysis.

G.,
I would go get a pregnancy test ASAP. It would help easy your mind for one thing and if it's positive make an appoitment with your Dr. immediately.
As far as any health risk, every pregnancy has its own risk. I know of quite a few people who had babies 10 to 13 months apart from each other...my grandmother, my aunt, and my college roommate's mom, just to name a few. The crazy thing about the roommate's mom, is her OB/GYN told her as long as she was breastfeeding Lib(her 3rd child) she couldn't get pregnant. Tad was born exactly 10 months after Lib.
I hope everything works out for you. Now go to the store and get that test!

It could be either. I nursed my first son exclusively and started my cycle 3 weeks later but was irregular until I got pregnant with my second (15 mo. later) whom I alternated bottle/breast for only 4 months and did not start my cycle for at least 6 months.

A friend of mine went through the same thing and found out that she was pregnant with her 3rd; so my advice would be...since you are on certain med's that may effect a pregnancy, if I were you I would check in with your OB ASAP and get a blood work up to see if your pregnant. When you call, ask to see if it is safe for you to stop taking your meds until you are positive that you're in the clear. Thoughts that I'm sure have already crossed your mind but hopefully somewhat helpful. Good Luck!
