Yesterday, my son went to the potty all day. He didn't have an accident until I put him down for a nap. I even made sure he went potty before nap and he didn't even sleep that long. I was going to put him in underwear in the middle of the night, but decided to put him in a pull up at night time. He also did not go poop all day until I put the pull up on him at night and we went poop then.
My son is very afraid of using the big potty. We are going out tomorrow to run to the store and I don't want to put him in a pull up, but he's terrified of using the big potty. We are going to my MIL's house tomorrow evening and she has a small potty there, but we also have 2 other places to go to. I really do not want to drag his potty from home all over.

Is there a smaller, easier way or thing that I can purchase that would be convenient, not scary, so that I can still have him in underwear instead of pull ups when we are out?

Thanks In Advance!

What can I do next?

Really, while I am sure that there are things you can purchase, really, this is not a fight I would be dealing with right now. You will be in so many different places that accidents are just bound to happen! Save yourself the stress, do pull ups for the holiday crazy season, and then, when you know you will be home for a while and things have calmed down, tackle the big potty issue. I would continue to ask him, and take the small potty with you to people's homes if that is where you are headed..so that you can keep it up to some degree, but there is just so much chaos right now for you and him, that in my opinion, it is best to wait a week. Best of luck, and have a very merry Christmas!! ~A.~

Honestly, I'd just try to get him used to the big potty. I would not enable his fear by carrying around a small potty for him, if that is what you are suggesting. Maybe you could get those bullseyes you throw in the potty and let them pee on. This may make it fun to use the big potty.

I agree with the mom who said wait until after the holidays and put him in pullups for now. Wait until your routine is back to normal. My son was afraid of the potty, too and still hates the loud flushing noise and he's almost 5. When we were trying to potty train and we discovered he was afraid of the potty, his pedi suggested letting him sit on the big potty with the lid down and him fully clothed and read a book he liked. He told us to do it for 2 weeks everyday at the same time. Never force him to sit though. It had to be his decision. He can just stand by the potty if he would rather, then you can gradually get him sitting over time. After 2 weeks see if he will sit on the potty in his undies, lid down and read. Continue working towards him on the potty without fear, but the key is never force. This worked for my son and within a month he was on the potty without being afraid, except for the flushing part. Good luck!!

My youngest is 10 so it's been awhile but I still remember this stage! I did 3 different things. 1st, I had one of those foldable seats that laid over the big seat. I think the problem I had with that is it was possible that it would pinch their little bottom if it wasn't perfectly flat when placed on it! Second I had a padded little toilet seat that sat on top of the regular seat, making it just the right size. Bigger than the foldable one, but I just put it in a plastic bag, then a tote bag, so you couldn't tell what I was carrying around. Then 3rd, as a last resort when I was desparate and didn't have my portable seats with me, I actually sat down on the toilet seat first, scooted WAY back, and held my child under his arms in front of me. I was blocking off about 1/3 of the possible space, and holding him up under his armpits, so he wasn't afraid of falling in.

All of these solutions were based on the fact that my child was afraid of falling in, and I didn't blame him! They WILL fall in if they don't hold on to the sides when they're very little!

Good luck.

Ahh I had the same problem.I dont agree with the others I think transitioning him is better than just forcing him to go if he is scared. To me that could make him not want to go at all.Anway i have just the thing for you.there is a foldable potty seat you just set it on top of the big potty. This worked great for my son he wasnt scared anymore when he didnt feel like he was going to fall in.I got myine on line but I got it off tagets website so they may very well have it in store.I got one that is blue and has sponge bob on it and my son doesnt mind it at all.It folds completely up and fits right in my diaper bag.Love it!!!!Good luck
