Pipes Making Very Loud Noise

Hopefully someone has had this same issue. When we flush the toilets, the pipes make a very loud noise. There are no other issues that I know of. Has anyone had any experience with this and why was the noise? I really don't want to have to pay a plumber just for some noisy pipes.

What can I do next?

Basically, it is a vibration set up by flushing the toilet that is reverberating throughout the house.

One thing you can do is to reduce the amount of water that flows into the toilet... just turn the handle behind the toilet a bit, flush the toilet and see if that fixes it.

If not, turn it a bit again, and try again. Keep trying until that stops the noise. Hopefully you will find that point where the noise stops, but water will still come in.

Sometimes this helps... it will take longer for the toilet to fill, but it will still put the same amount of water into the tank, and reduce that vibration.

someone didnt strap them to the wall when they installed them. only way to fix is knock out the wall and strap them. problem is you don't know where in the wall it needs strapping.

Air in the pipes, no big deal. Mine do it when the dishwasher or fridge use water, sometimes the outside pipes.

Yes I was going to say Water Hammer too! :) We thought that's what my parents had with their house & Googled how to fix it. We were shocked that it didn't work, but also we were wondering why it happened only early in the morning :/ ...my dad mentioned it to the neighbors one day just in passing, & it turns out it was their (the neighbors) sprinkler system!! LOL ;D Too funny they went through all that process of trying to eliminate the water hammer! :D

Sounds like the "water hammer" effect. It is just air caught in the water pipes but it ca be very annoying! Try turning off the water to the whole house then open every valve (turn on all the faucets) to let the water and air drain out. Then turn off all the valves/faucets upstairs and leave the lower valves/faucets open while you turn the water main back on. Once the water is running through the lower valves, turn the upstairs faucets on too for at least 20 seconds or so. After that, turn all the faucets off the way you normally would and try flushing. I hope this works! We had to do this twice in our previous home, but it was worth the hassle. Good luck!

When my husband and I bought our first house we had this issue. The pipes did not make the noise when we flushed, they made this HORRIBLE loud noise at anytime day or night, kind of a screaming/screeching noise. My hubby figured out that the on/off valve for the toilet just needed to be loosened/tightened just a little bit. Thank goodness, I thought we'd bought the money pit!!!

Give it a try.

Sounds like you have air in the pipes. I know that when we have a water main break and they shut off the water for a while and then turn it back on, our pipes bang so bad they sound like they are coming through the wall. Does it do it with the sinks or just the toilets?
