We had a recent trip to the vet and got a prescription once a month flea tablet "comfortis" that is great. We Ihave two dogs and at $20 a tablet that could get costly since we would use it pretty much all year long with the warm weather. I would love to know what you use for flea prevention ONLY IF IT WORKS. I definitely need something waterproof because they love the water. Thanks to all who share their info!

What can I do next?

Frontline Plus. It is fine for the water as long as they don't get in it right after applying. A day or two later is ok. It lasts 30 days for ticks, and up to 90 days for fleas. It is an oil that you apply between the shoulder blades. It is closer to $10 per treatment.

Been using it for years and have never had fleas.

We have 3 dogs, live on a wooded lot backing up to an 85 acre park with wildlife such as bobcats, coyotes, etc and we do not use any extra product on our dogs.

We are proactive with yard, house and house perimeter treatment. We built this house 12 yrs ago and have never had a flea, tick or othe bug issue at our home.

I cook with a lot of fresh garlic and my dogs love a bite of it when I cook. I've heard garlic helps, I don't know but they do get a good taste a few times a week, little tastes,,, not overdone.

I love Comfortis! I use it for my dog....

Here is what one vet suggests... I don't know how big your dogs are, but he suggests to his clients to buy the NEXT bigger size, and break it in half...

(I know that Comfortis doesn't recommend doing this... but I was at a standard physician's office recently (in Las Vegas), and they had a poster in one of the exam rooms talking about they will write a script for a larger dose and have you split it..... if physicians and vets say it is ok, I don't see a problem... just split it carefully.)

For example, my dog is about 55 lbs... so I buy the 60-120 size, and break it in half.... that way, instead of the $15 each (from one vet, another charges $18 each), it only costs $7.50 a month... still expensive, I know... I sure wish they had that for cats!

My daughter's MIL has several small dogs... so she buys the 60-120 and quarters it for her little dogs (probably 10-15 lbs each) ... that way she gets 4 doses out of one tablet. She goes to the same vet I went to.....

We use Frontline Plus because of ticks. No swimming or baths two days before or after application. If they are in the water every day you might have to use closer to every 3 weeks than four. I think Comfortis is great if you only have fleas and it really is a wonderful product. Is it any cheaper if you buy a larger quantity at one time?

I would check into making sure they spread the medicine evenly throughout if you cut in half, a nice idea if it works. I know Heartgard only has the medication in one part of the chew, not all of it, so half might equal no medicaition.

Check about Sentinel too, if you do not have major infestations it usually works well and also gives you your heartworm and intestinal parasite prevention for the month.

I use Advantix II & Advantix for the cats (I don't think they make a II for cats-weird (!) ). With three dogs & the same number of cats it gets expensive...I use the tabs every other month though it says every month & in this FLEA RIDDEN area (you are from AL too) it still works fine. The cost is basically the same as for the comfortis but doesn't require a script from the Vet, you can get the Advantix meds from Jeffers or 1-800-Pet-Meds. The GOOD ones ALL work, the cheapies unfortunately DO NOT!
When it comes to flea meds you get what you pay for! The good stuff works through bathing, mud, woods, swimming, etc..

Happy Summer to you & your 4pawed family!

I like Advantix for my dog. Water alone won't wash it off, but soap will.
