Period Question: Can Anyone Help Me Understand?

In the last 5 months, my periods have starting going all over the map. I use to be a regular 26-29 day kind of girl, and was for many years. After having my first two kids, things seem to have gotten back to that place, but then starting in Dec, when we decided to start trying for a baby, things have gotten crazy. It's been like this: 24 days, 32 days, 24 days, 32 days, and now 22 days.

In any case, I swear to god I was ovulating on Sunday of this week, yet, I now have my period. The last few months I also swear that I have NOT been ovulating. I know my body, got pregnant three times before in 1 month, but things are crazy. I will be 40 next month, so I could be perimenopausal.

Also, up until Sept. I had very, very heavy bleeding. Now things seem to be back to pre-baby, 3.5 days of period, with 1 heavy day. It's been about 13 months that I've been back to having my period after 4 years (I had one period between pregnancies, and I do not ovulate while nursing).

Any ideas? I will make an appointment with the Dr, but meanwhile, I am trying to figure out what is going on. I'm ready to give up on a third baby and just go get the dog hubby wants.

p.s. The months when I was very late the blood was very bright, as opposed to this month, where it is dull!

What can I do next?

Yes, have the doctor run some tests. I have a girlfriend who recently described what you are describing, and she gained a lot of insight and direction from having tests done, examining the results and discussing options. Good luck!

I have been going through the same exact thing only mine are still heavy and I am only 30. I started today after 24 days. Last month it was 26, the month before that it was 33 etc etc. It was never like this before I had my 3rd child. I just had an ultrasound and full blood panel done and nothing much is showing up so the doctor says it is hormonal and wants me to try a holistic path to regulating my hormones. She thinks birth control pills are horrible for you so she won't go that route. I do know, just from researching, that thyroid problems can cause menstrual irregularities so get your thyroid checked as well. Good luck to you...

Yes, I would talk to your OBGYN. I had the same issue after having my son. I ended up going on BC pills to regulate my periods, although that may not be what you want to do if you are trying to get pregnant.

Read the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". Get to know your fertility signs and take your temp daily. You'll know within a month or two whether or not you are ovulating and you'll be able to better predict when you will get your period. You'll also know exactly when you are about to ovulate so you can time sex for best chances at pregnancy.

You are probably ovulating (if you are getting a period, you probably ovulated that month). However, you might have a luteal phase which is too short in some months (swearing you ovulated, but getting period too quick after). The luteal phase is the second half of the cycle...if your progesterone falls too fast you can get your period too quick. All this comes with the hormonal fluctuations with age. But, if you still ovulate, you can still get pregnant. You aren't that old.
