Can everyone share their experiences with reflux in newborns. Has anyone used Pepcid and how long did it take to work and did it work at all.

What can I do next?

C. - My 4 month old was diagnosed with acid reflux at about 6 or 7 weeks old. He's been on Prevacid for about 2 months now and it has helped tremendously. Now he barely spits up anymore and doesn't cry after every feeding. I ran out of the prescription several weeks ago and then the next day he fell asleep before I could give it to him, so he didn't have it for 2 days and he cried a lot the 2nd day, but was fine once he had the medicine again, so I could tell it was helping him. It's horrible to see them in so much pain with the reflux, but I'm glad there is medicine to help them.

I hope this helps.

My daughter is 11 weeks old and was diagnosed with multiple food allergies and reflux. She was put on zantac(too low of a dose) about 1 1/2 months ago,and then about 1 month ago she was put on pepcid. A common side effect for this drug if abdominal pain, she screamed for 2 days. She screamed more than she did when she was admitted to the hospital and they stated an IV. After taking her off of it and putting her on the correct dose of Zantac she is doing much better. But keep in mind that drugs act differently with different babies. So what works for on may not work for the other and so on. Just monitor your baby's behavior when he starts any new meds and report anything you feel is abnormal. good luck and let us know how it works out.

C.,

My son had severve Reflux and colic from birth until about 9 months old. The pediatrician prescribed Previcid to us and it worked wonders.(I was very leary at first giving my newborn a medication made for adults...but the dr. assured us it was OK) It comes in a liquid form that you have to mix together with water, the pharmacist should have you figure out how much to mix, as infant doses are so off from any other dose. We kept him on it until 9 months, at which time we weaned him off of it, of course witht the doctors advice. He is now 16 months and is doing great. Until we started the meds, we were like walking zombies. He was in terrible pain, and was not able to keep anything down. Within a few weeks of starting the meds we noticed a huge improvement. Call your Ped. and let them know what going on. I strongly suggest the previcid.

My daughter had moderate reflux... she was on Prilosec, which is in the same class of drugs as Pepcid. It took a couple of days for the meds to take effect. We could definitely tell a difference in her comfort level when the meds were working (vs. when we took her off of them too soon or when we needed to increase her dose).

Keep in mind that this type of medication does NOT reduce spit-ups - it just makes the stomach contents less acidic, which in turn makes the spitups less painful/damaging to the esophagus.

Hi C.,

My 4 1/2 month old was recently put on Zantac, because she spit up after every single feeding, ALOT. And it was very obvious she was having tummy pains too. Anyways, it started working after about a week and it been very good for her. Now she spits up maybe every 4th feeding, and not nearly as much as she did before the medicine. I feel bad giving it to her though..it tastes like CRAP! But it works...

my daughter was 6 weeks old when she was put on pepcid, it worked wonders. it took about 5 days for it to get into her system but it worked. my daughter had a hard time keeping food down i went threw several formula and the only thing that seem to help was the pepcid. i took her off of it at about a year of old, once she started with solid foods i lowed the dose. good luck hope it works as well for your lil one as it did mine.

At Yale New Haven Hospital, they told us to give her (don't remember the quantity though) Maalox. They gave us a syringe without the needle part to put it into her mouth, it did help prevent the reflux completely! But you should probably ask your doctor just to be sure, and ask the dosage on that, too, since I don't remember what it was... but the Maalox really did work 100%.
