Orange Poop

My daughter is 2.5 months old and is mostly breastfed. We are having to supplement her with 4 ounces of formula a day for weight gain purposes.
We have not changed formula and I'm not eating any differently that I am aware of.
Last night she had orange poop.
I've never seen poop that color orange. It was not red at all. Just REALLY orange.
Any ideas?

What can I do next?

My breastfed babies always had mustard yellow poop - it was weird to start seeing other colors introduced with different solids. That said, anything you've eaten with food dye - ketchup, koolaid, cake frosting, vitamins, will transfer.

I'd keep an eye out for signs of sickness, but otherwise don't worry.

If she's on an antibiotic, they sometimes change the color of poo. Otherwise it would have to be somethine you are eating - carrots especially have a lot of whatever it is that can make your skin turn orange. My oldest had really green poop when she was little and breastfed...if it doesn't change in a day or so, I'd call the Dr. for advice, but if she's eating/sleeping/playing well, then she's probably fine.

Is she by any chance on an antibiotic? My son was on omnicef and had really orange poop. Sorry I'm not more help if she isn't on meds.
Also, though, I've heard you should really only be alarmed when it is black poop.

Could of been something you ate. The poop will change from time to time nothing to worry about unless she is having blood in the stool or she becomes constipated or loose bowel.

You will find the color and textures will change as she gets older. From a mustard seed texture and color, to pea grean and even a blueish color (when my DD ate bannanas this would happen).

I have seen Orange quite often...now RED nope that I have not seen.

Congratulations on your little one! I think it's fairly normal for breastfed babies to have yellow and/or orange poop. If it still causes you concern, call your pediatrician and ease your mind.

What did you have to eat? That could have been the reason.

The only time I noticed orange poop in my children was when carrots or sweet potatoes were eaten, and it doesn't sound like that is the case if nothing is different. Could be a touch of a cold or something, but I wouldn't be too concerned unless it lasted a few days. From your note, sounds like it just happened. If it continues, I'd ask a Dr.'s input.

Hi,
Google "about.com cause of orange stool". The short: It could be something that was eaten or it could mean a lack of bile salt.
