Oral Thrush and 103 Fever in 19 Month Old

My 19 month old was diagnosed with oral thrush yesterday and this afternoon he started running a fever. Has anyone else seen a fever and thrush in a toddler? Not sure where he got the thrush, and now he has a fever. It's not hand foot mouth or strep, though they didn't do a strep culture. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Ditto Diane B. I'll add that if he has thrush in his mouth then his entire little body is eaten up with it. Yeast grows from the inside out so if you can see it there's a lot. You have to get it under control from the inside because it weakens the body and can cause susceptibility to other things.

Remove all sugars (even white potatoes, rice, breads, etc) and start him on a probiotic. Yogurt will help if you feed him the unflavored kind. The fever is doing its job. 103 is not too high, but it is telling you something is going on. With his immune system so weak, he open to pick up more.

Regards,
M.

Poor kid.

It comes from a very common fungus (candida - same as what causes yeast infections in women and many diaper rashes) - antibiotics can set it off by killing off beneficial bacteria that keep it in check. So the fungus is present naturally in the mouth and the digestive tract - I wouldn't look to "where he got it" so much as "what conditions existed to set it off?"

I would think any infection can cause a fever, whether it's bacterial, viral or fungal. Call the pediatrician or talk to the pharmacist about whether certain fever reducers make the problem worse.

Sounds like strep to me. Thrush generally doesn't present with fever. How does his breath smell? If it's pretty stinky, I'd head back for a strep culture.
