One Year Old with Egg Allergy

Hi,
My one year old has a level 2 egg allergy (scale is 0-6). He eats pasta and baked goods with no problems and has even had a litle bit of pancakes but waffles made him break out. Does anyone have any suggestions for breakfast foods that don't contain eggs? He is so sick of cheerios and oatmeal and only wants to eat bananas. Thanks!

You can actually substitute banana in mixes for the egg. So pancakes become banana pancakes. DELISH. Add just a bit more water/milk for consistency.

My 2 year old son also has an egg allergy (level 4) along with a milk allergy. For breakfast he eats Van's waffles, which are dairy and egg free. They have blueberry or regular flavor and also have pancakes which are egg free. They must be pretty good because my son loves them and would eat them all day if he could! You can find Van's waffles at Jewel in the organic frozen section or at Whole Foods. I am pretty sure the pancakes can only be found at Whole Foods, but, check Jewel. Yogurt is also a good option.
If you like to make things, Whole Foods carries a powder egg replacer which you can use to make a bunch of things yourself. Good luck!

My daughter's favorite breakfasts are Yobaby yogurt in a variety of flavors, or sticks of string cheese with fruit. Every once in a while I'll give her one of the milk & cereal breakfast bars as a treat.

Hi A.,

I would recommend checking out some vegan breakfast foods. I have a great cookbook called Vegan Brunch by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. See if they have it in your local library. It has tons of recipes for pancakes and waffles (and biscuits, scones, etc.) all without eggs.

you can buy pancake mix and make pancakes from "scratch". Pancake mix boxes that are labled Complete have you only add water. There are pancake mixes that you need to add egg to but the Complete ones do not need egg. I'm thinking if he is fine with pasta (egg added at some point) he should be fine with this. I would give a try. Toast & Jelly is always good, messy for little ones, but good. :)

Use Jiffy Mix verses Jiffy pancake mix. It has no eggs and can be substituted. Also you can add Egg Replacer by EnerG in homemade baked goods. Also Baking Without Eggs is a great book. If you really clear his diet of ALL eggs (even those in baked goods) he is more likely to outgrow the allergy. Not a breakfast food but Oreos and most Chips Ahoy are egg free. Check the package. I always have some on hand when we go to peoples houses. Other sneaky places eggs hide is some ice-creams, mayo, miracle whip, some salad dressings. If you have any questions feel free to email me. I have been dealing with this on and off for years. One child outgrew it by school--yeah. Had one year of bake how I wanted and now my daughter is allergic. Will retest once she enters school.

Hi A.,

Gail has the best answer here--she shared everything I wish I had known when I found out my son was allergic to eggs (honestly, who would think to look at mayo to see if there is egg in there?). The Egg Replacer by EnerG is really a godsend when it comes to baking at home.

Also, you can pick up some Quinoa pasta at Whole Foods, which is egg free. We love it! I also recommend playing around with regular recipes and making them without eggs--lasagna & stuff peppers or meatloaf are just fine without them.

One last thing: Dairy Queen softserve & Oberweis softserve are both egg-free. So, you don't have to cut out ice cream altogether, yeah!

My soon to be 7 year old has a similiar egg allergy. He can eat baked goods, just not eggs by themselves. For a year he ate a nutragrain bar and bananas for breakfast. Yogurts and smoothies are good too. The good news is his allergy has become less severe and hopefully he will outgrow it soon. I hope the same for your little guy!

My kids eat tons of yoghurt.Also, we like smoothies with one can of peaches ,two bananas, and a cup or two of crushed ice . Blend it all and you have enough for two adults and one or two children, It's delicious and can have it year round when most fruit isn't in season. Good luck :)

We do breakfast sausages in the morning. They are almost 30% of the fat requirement and are a great source of protein. I usually find an all natural/non-gmo version and if you get the flat round ones they can eat the pieces by themselves. Have you tried breakfast ham on the skillet, bacon or breakfast potatos? I know it is hard to get stuff in on spoons, but will he eat yogurt? Have you done blueberries? Or maybe sliced peaches in a whipped cream? Earth's best waffles are egg free too I think. There is an english muffin at whole foods that may work too if you cover it with butter. Cheesy toast is a hit. You could even offer your leftovers from dinner the night before. We were dealing with dairy and soy allergies, I know how tough it is on a limited diet. Good luck!
