On Again off Again Upset Stomach

I have a five year old who has had issues for 3 weeks now with his stomach. Sometimes he throws up, other times he lays on his stomach because he says that helps him feel better. He will feel fine for days at a time and then all of a sudden it returns. He doesn't seem to be under stress. He has no occompanying fever. He will have a regular bowel then the next one runny; back and forth like that. We have taken him to the Dr. 3x and haven't solved mystery yet although he has only so far had one lab test and we know it is not urinary tract infection (no duh). Could it be food allergy? Parasites? I'm at a loss.

So What Happened?

Dear Sweet Mama's, Thank you for all your input. The reason I haven't told anyone what has happen yet is because we are still waiting for our appointment. We are Military and the wait time was long for the gastro dr. we don't see them until the 12th. We tried to get something faster but to get a specialist it looks like we'd have to fight insur. to be seen off post then get that dr. to do a reccomendation. Our Dr. didn't feel like it is an emergency and said if we feel like it is then we should go to ER. Frustating. Good news is he hasn't had tummy pain or thrown up in a week. With your suggestions I started trying to weed out foods, I tried no gluten for a few days boy was that hard. Then I talked to a nurse (and someone else had mentioned) don't start with that one. So I weeded out milk and then one night he insisted on having a huge glass of milk. He threw up that nigh and hasn't had dairy since and seems to be fine again. He loves dairy. So hopefully when I see this specialist it'll be productive. Thanks agian Ladies!

I am sorry that the doctor has not been able to help, this must be incredibly difficult.

I have pretty severe celiac sprue which is an intolerance for wheat, barley, oats, and rye and I have similar symptoms when I have one of these baddies. I would not suggest taking it away and seeing if it gets better but perhaps see what happens the day after spaghetti night...if these types of symptoms arise then have him tested for the disease(you have to have the antibodies to have a reactive test so do not change the diet until after the diagnosis)

Best of luck!!

M.,

When you have exhausted all your considerations, take him to Childrens Hospital. Our son suffered from an upset stomach on and off accompanied by diarrhea and sometimes just held the bucket knowing he was going to throw up, this went on for a couple of years and I (and the pediatricians) could not put my finger on the cause. We FINALLY took him to Childrens where the internal medicine doctor assured us that he could get to the bottom of the problem. It took a few tests but found out he was simply Fructose intolerant. No disrespect intended to pediatricians but don't let him suffer too long unnecessarily.

It may just be gas. I don't want to say it's not one of these other more serious things, but I used to throw up when I had gas. And laying on my stomach helped me feel better, too. Gas can last a really long time- it's not uncommon for it to last for weeks, apparently, and could be caused by food sensitivities. I wouldn't expect he has any true food allergies- just something he's reacting to right now. I would recommend seeing a naturopath who can give some dietary guidance. Hope he feels better soon!

Hi M. -

Stomach upset and nausea can be indicators of a gluten sensitivity (or other food sensitivity). Chiropractic and Naturopathic care can be a great help in addition to conventional medical doctors. Utilize all the resources around you and don't give up if a doctor tells you there's nothing you can do. You may need a 3rd or 4th or 5th opinion, but it's worth it to get this resolved for your son's sake.

Blessings,
J.

I would definitely check out food allergies. I have a relative (aged 3) who throws up if he eats legumes. Another friend's little boy has a peanut allergy and he throws up if he has anything with peanuts in it.

M., if the doctor can't find anything wrong with your son you might want to try a different avenue or "second opinion," if you will. Take him to a Naturopathic Doctor and see what he/she advises. I have had great success with mine for my son. Always friendly and the visits are usually an hour or more so there is plenty of time for a thorough exam and questions. Not sure where you live but I see Dr. Kathleen Allen in Woodinville, WA at Mother and Child Natural Medicine clinic. She is fabulous! Hope this helps and that your son will be better soon, poor thing.

You need to get him to a PEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGIST. I HIGHLY recommend Dr Lind Muir at Swedish Children's Hospital in Seattle. I travel there every few months to see her for my daughter. Her office # ###-###-####

What you described in what your son goes through sounds like a gastro problem. Especially with his bowel movements going back and forth. My daughter had similar symptoms, but it wasn't until she started pooping blood that we were able to really figure out what was wrong. She would always lay on the floor and do tummy crunches with her hand on her lower abdomen about 30 minutes before she had a bowel movement. She was 2 years old when diagnosed with Ulcerative Colits, now she has Crohns Disease. Both are a more severe type of IBS(irritable bowel syndrome). She is now 10 & has had 5 colonoscopes, due to complications. Crohns is the worst of all IBS. My husband has it too.

Please call and get him in to see Dr Muir. She had been in Spokane at Sacred Heart Childrens Hospital and when she moved to Seattle, we followed her! She is that good!!

Take him to a different doc. It sounds like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and although he is too young for it, some thing should be done for his symptoms. He is too young to be uncomfortable.

I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the symptoms you describe fits that diagnosis. I have read that children can have IBS tho it's not as common as it is with adults. My daughter thinks that her daughter has IBS because she has diarrhea and hard stools and complains of stomach discomfort. There isn't a test for IBS. It's diagnosed by the elimination of other disorders and the presence of certain symptoms.

I also have food allergies and am lactose intolerant. None of my food allergies cause those symptoms. I just feel nausaous or break out in hives or have an itchy mouth, throat, and/or ears. No vomiting, no gas, perhaps diarrhea.

Dairy products can cause the symptoms you describe. Lactose intolerance is not an allergy. With lactose intolerance our body lacks lactase(?) which is needed to digest the lactose.

Lactose intolerance is common. Milk allergies are less common. My granddaughter was diagnosed with a milk allergy when she was just a few months old. The pediatrician did blood testing and found that she was allergic to other foods also. My granddaughter is now 8 and has outgrown all of her allergies except to peanuts.

Allergies and lactose intolerance can take time to develop. His system may have been able to manage dairy until recently. I drank lots of milk growing up without having symptoms. My grandfather owned a dairy. I developed gas and diarrhea as an adult. Same for my father.

Science doesn't know what causes irritable bowel. It is a complex disorder. I found that I had severe diarrhea when I was under stress. When life was calm I had minor bouts of diarrhea. The diarrhea can be caused by food but can also be caused by other things, some of which are still unknown. Going back and forth between diarrhea and regular or hard stools is common with irritable bowel syndrome.

So is abdominal discomfort and/or pain. I have not thrown up with IBS. It could be a symptom. Children are much more sensitive and tend to throw up more often than adults.

My daughter who has had similar symptoms was finally diagnosed as being gluten intolerant by a naturopath. She's not had gluten for a couple of weeks now and says she does feel some better. At first she thought doing without gluten would be especially difficult. She found a gluten free section in the health food section of Fred Meyer and a couple of cookbooks with gluten free recipes and says it's not as difficult as she expected. She does have to plan ahead.

I recommend, because it's a simple thing to do, taking him off of ALL dairy products for at least 2 weeks and see if that makes a difference. No cheese, ice cream, yogurt, puddings, no milk on cereal etc. He can use rice milk instead. I would stay away from soy for now. Soy is a common allergen.

YOu could then test by taking him off of gluten which is found in wheat products.

I hiked in the Grand Canyon and came back with more abdominal pain and watery stools than usual. The doctor finally tested my stool and found that I had picked up a parasite.

Parasites are uncommon in populated areas. Maybe there are none at all. I don't remember. One has to have gone into the wilderness or a foreign country to get a parasite. We can pick up parasites when we camp. If your son has not had that type of exposure it's unlikely that he has parasites.

Worms can be found in the soil of a city. They usually have a third symptom of an itchy anus especially at night. The person infected with worms loses weight over a short period of time. Your son's symptoms do not sound like worms to me.

Finding a cause for your son's discomfort may take quite awhile. Hopefully he'll feel better before you go down the complicated road to find a diagnosis.

One of my nephews was throwing up off and on for a few weeks and it turned out to be pneumonia. Strep can also cause a child to throw up.

I think something may be going around. my two kiddos have had the diarrhea thing for a few days now and the little one has thrown up once. Aside from that, they both seem fine and have no other flu like symptoms, they just both occasionally say that their tummies are a little upset. I have also heard of a couple other kiddos with the same thing....so maybe it's just a virus? Good Luck!

Maybe try to cut out dairy products. We just found out that my 5 yr old daughter is allergic to all dairy and bloats and gets stomach cramps and runny poo. We cut off all dairy and give her soy based everything and she has some alot better. Ask the docs about this.

Hi M.,
Here's my two cents worth. I've seen Dr. Popp in Woodburn Or. We've had parasites in the past, and the reg. dr's didn't find anything. Even with stool samples and blood work. Either way, he can probably find out what the problem is. I would definetly call him! I don't know the number off hand.
