Olympics question...anyone Else Disappointed?

We have been watching the Olympics...

Overall - I'm liking it. Since I was a swimmer in high school and college - I LOVE to watch them race!!!

However, my disappointment is with gymnastics...I MISS seeing scores like 5 through 10. I don't "get" the 15.6 - I want to see a 9 or a 10 darn it!!! I remember Nadia Comenchie in the 1976 Montreal Olympics get the FIRST PERFECT 10!!!
Am I the only one who is disappointed by the new scoring system?

We have enjoyed the Tae Kwon Do event as well. It's not shown as much as swimming or gymnastics...but still!!!
What's your favorite event to watch?

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I haven't been watching it as much this week so I haven't noticed the scoring.

But my favorites are the cycling and swimming and diving and gymnastics. And probably a few more I can't think of right now. =)

I just wish I could be there. We attended the Olympics in Atlanta and it was one of the best times of our lives. The excitement, the camaraderie of everyone there. It was amazing.

It is interesting that even live, there are lots of events happening all at once. It would be impossible to show everything live because they overlap all day, every day.

The medal ceremonies are going on not at scheduled times, but based on when the competition is completed.. .. So there is no true schedule for everything. The tickets you purchase for an event is based on time.. not always on the completion of the event.

On the track fields it is like a 5 ring circus. People running, throwing, jumping, all sorts of things.. All at the exact same time the swimming is in another location, the rowing somewhere else, You would have to have so many PIP you would be cross eyed.

The Gymnastics is held at a venue again hard to decide what to watch because so many events all at once.

Anyway, if you EVER have the opportunity to attend an Olympics.. It is totally worth the Hefty price. People from all over the world cheering on each and every athlete, because you know how hard they have worked and what it has taken for them to be there.

I'm very disappointed with the new scoring system. I miss the old way. Also, in this day and age there is no excuse for saving the "good" events to show in the evenings...and showing just clips. We don't even get to see most people get their medals. I was especially upset with the needless and senseless editing of the opening ceremony, omitting the beautiful and powerful dance and inserting that pointless interview in its place.

I give NBC about a 3 on a scale of 1-10.

Me too, me too! I like the old scoring system as well. I understand the reasoning but I highly 'dislike'!

I have enjoyed most events except the water polo - boooooring. I'm not a fan of soccer either so I will just wait for the results of the women's soccer.

I love learning about all of the events and the athletes. The scull racer from Niger is my hero as he had never done that until 3 mos. prior (his country asked him to do for the Olympics). He came is dead last and 1:40 minutes after 1st place but he was just happy he crossed the finish line :) I had to turn off the match w/ Serena and Sharapova - her annoying screams each and every time she hit the ball were worse than scratching my nails across a chalkboard!

Oh I'm jealous! This is the first time I've wished I had cable. We've been able to watch a few prime moments, and those have been fun, but I'm nowhere near up to date. Didn't even realize there was a new scoring system!

I just got to show my girls Nadia's performance. Kind of made me tear up, you know? Such beautiful perfection, like she's not even human but some ethereal being from a different world. Can you imagine being able to move like that? Not me! I fall down just trying to get from one side of the room to the next.

I don't mind the scoring system, but I have not been impressed by the fragmented coverage. I totally agree that I don't need to see ANY medal presentations on NBC. Maybe put those online for those who want to see them.

The men's high bar competition last night was PHENOMENAL!!

eta...and the gymnastics announcers are always trying to one-up each other. Pretty annoying.

eta2 - hmm, I saw the men's rings competition a few nights ago. Astounding strength!

I love the gymnastics, but it's kind of a bummer to already know who wins (and it's really hard not to know) before I watch it.

The part the really frustrates me even more than learning about it before it airs is that the announcers are clearly already know the results. During one if the women's team competitions they were showing the Romanians on the beam. When the first girl was in the middle of her routine, Al Trotwell said, "This is the one who had that low score, right?" And Tim Dagget said, "That's right, Al, she only scored a ... while the other girls scored a ... " Why can't they announce it as it's happening and then show us the tape?

I just want to pretend I'm watching it live. It's just not the same. At least we won't have that problem in 2016!

I don't mind the new scoring system. You can still see a 9 or 10, just look at the execution score. Or take the deductions and subtract them from 10. I think the new system rewards those who take the bigger risks, although that does backfire on occasion. The more difficult the routine, the more leeway for errors. You can still get a big score because of the difficulty. As much as the sport has evolved, they had to do something with the scoring.

I am extremely disappointed with NBC's live streaming of the events. I watched the gymnastics finals Sunday morning and in just under 2.5 hours, they put in 36 commercials. An average time of 3.97 minutes between commercials. I kept a log of all of them because I was getting so frustrated. As soon as the commentators would start critiquing a routine, a commercial would come on. I emailed NBC and they said they have to rely on advertising to make sure the footage is free. Blah, blah, blah. I don't mind the commercial breaks, but the sheer number of them was ridiculous.

I like diving, gymnastics, beach volleyball. I'll watch just about all of them except soccer and most of the track and field events.

We've been disappointed from the beginning. I feel like there is no sense of real time, have no idea of when the event took place, and feel like we only get clips. We enjoyed the last Olympics much more.

AND, with FB being such a spoiler it has taken away from watching it.

I didn't want the Cliff Notes version.

I love the Olympics, but I'm with you on the new scoring system. They did a little highlight reel on Nadia Comenichi and I was explaining to my kids that she was the first athlete to get a perfect 10 - they didn't think that was a big deal because they just watched a girl get a 15! So my little comment led to a 20 minute discussion of how they changed the system, why (to irritate us), etc etc.

I'm loving the women's soccer. That game agains Canada was one of the best soccer games I've ever seen, they are such a phenominally talented group of women!

I've also been oddly glued to the men's water polo matches. Wonder if it has something to do with the thong-like swimsuits they wear :)

TV coverage of events is never any good. TV only shows SOME of the events.
If you go online, via your computer you can watch any event you want, via the tv station's website.
That is what we do. It is free. Its just online.
We have this gadget, that you plug in, and then whatever you see on your laptop online, can be seen on your TV screen too.
Its some Apple/MAC gadget my Husband had gotten, from the Apple store.

I like to watch Archery, Fencing, Track & Field, Swimming. But like always, I just do not have much time to watch, tv.

I've been very disappointed in the coverage. I didn't see a single vault or rings rountine in the men's team competition. I love gymnastics and swimming equally, but I would much rather see the medal contending gymnastics rountines over preliminary swimming events. Was there a single swimming race they didn't show? I like the new scoring system for rewarding the risk takers. It took me a little to understand how it works, but now I know the execution score is the same as the old scoring system and then the level of difficulty is added in.

I didn't know you were also a swimmer! Me too!! In fact, while I was growing up there were 2 main club teams. One was coached by Ryan Lochte's dad. I swam for the other one. I didn't miss a single swim race last week - LOVED every minute of it!

As far as gymnastics, I don't think I ever really understood the scoring, so it wasn't disappointing for me this time around. I'm only disappointed that somehow my DVR malfunctioned and I missed it 2 nights ago! Oh well. I'll be sad to see the whole thing end :(

I would love to watch archery -- but you can't see it unless you pay to get streaming or pay to have obscure cable channels NBC owns (I think, they don't advertise HOW you can see these "less popular" sports). I would love to see more than a 10-second item on an archer as part of a roundup.

I'd love to see more of the equestrian sports and shooting sports and, well, all the stuff that is shoved aside for hours and hours and hours of beach volleyball, gymnastics, and endless endless endless swimming. Sorry, I really do like to watch all the above, but every single night? And water polo and basketball in the daytime. Day after day. Decathlon got a nod yesterday, but when did they show any of women's heptathlon? Oh, yes, a Brit won that and not an American, so NBC wasn't really interested.

With gymnastics, it appears that only the American team turned up. They're all we saw, with a few items of the Chinese and Romanians thrown in. Was any other country even there, really? Well, at least with diving, they've shown other countries' teams. Maybe because diving is so fast, they would only have 30 seconds of coverage if they just showed Americans like they do with other sports.

And my husband and I would like to see some profiles of athletes who are not Americans. Occasionally NBC condescends to profile someone if they're really unusual or outstanding (like the terrific South African Oscar Pistorius, who races with his artificial "cheetah legs") but unless something makes you stand out like that -- forget it, only Americans are at these Games as far as NBC's concerned.

I sooooo agree with you about the scoring! It's kinda like when the kids start school and the grades are check marks or O's. You don't even know what the highest score can be because it's different for each person I think. Ugh!

I keep looking for the syncronized swimming and gymnastics with the ribbons and hoops. I love to watch those.

Love the gymnastics the most, but it is disappointing to see only a pieced together show of the highlights. I'd actually like to see ALL of the countries athletes, not just the top 4-6. Not that I don't love seeing team USA, but I'd like to see more of the other countries.

I hear ya..

I am most disappointed by not seeing not one male gymnast on the rings? The rings were my favorite as a young girl to watch...I remember being fascinated by The Superman! Maybe that's where my love of the big arms came from? ;)

I hate hearing who has won before actually watching the events...they should have agreed on a media blackout until it actually aired here in the USA.
